Show MR. J. E. OAINE, SECRETARY. Tho selection of Mr. .Joseph U. Caiuo as secretary of the Commercial club wns tho natural and appropriate thing for the board of governors to do. Mr. Caino has boon extremely efficient and courteous for many months, as nssistaul secretary. Upon him the chief labors of tho secretaryship have devolved in tho long illness , and partial disability of Mr. Harris; aud that ho has filled tho position well aud to Iho acceptance of all tho members is a tribute lo him from which thoro will bo no dissent. It is a natural thought upon the donth of a man such as Mr. Harris, who has occupied .a-position such as ho had occupied oc-cupied in it since tho formation of the Commercial club, that no one can fill his ulace. And in mauy ways as applied ap-plied to Mr. Harris, this usual observation observa-tion will be conceded to be true. Mr. Harris wasa man of various and high gifts, and ho dovoled them all unstinl-iugly unstinl-iugly to tho service of the club. Aud yet it id another saying that no man is indesponsable; lhat sonic one always al-ways arises who will acceptably till tho place. And this, we boliovc, will be found to be Iruo in tho caso of the vacancy created by tho death of Mr. Harris. There is no other Fisher Harris, Har-ris, it is. true; and yet Mr. Caine, we believe, will continuo tho good tradi-tions tradi-tions that Mr. Harris has afiixed upon Lhc unwritten constitution and usages of the' club; and so, while wo mourn tho (loath of Mr. Harris as iu a way irrcpar-a'ble, irrcpar-a'ble, wc look forward with confidence and hope to Iho efficient filling of Iho club secretaryship by Mr. Caine. |
