Show ACTION OF POLICE . IS BfSBEPBESEIiTEB Placed in False 'Light Ijy an Article in the Dcscrct News. Never since the dnys of tho peep hole brigade has tho pohco department of Salt Lakp City dono auyihiug that suited tho Desofof. News. Ln tho Desoret News on Saturday evening appeared a story under tho caption "Police Desert woman Whilo in Sad Plight." Then followed this story, or alleged story: Tlio need of un emergency hospital for this" city was never more keenly felt than today, when - for more than an hour a demented domnn, already suffering from a broken arm, and her suffering nddod to by a fall upon the pavement, was permitted per-mitted to suffer untold agony while awaiting await-ing relief from one of tho hospitals. And to the police belongs conaurc for absolute dereliction of duly. The .woman Is Mrs. Jennie ' Waldon, whose hair la white as snow. Shortly after 12 o'clock alio fell Immediately In front of tho Freed furniture furni-ture store on Third South Ktreot and was caniud Inside, whero (she rocolved tho attention at-tention of a number of ladles. The police department was notlileil, and the patrol wagon went to the place, and upon learning learn-ing that the woman hnd been rooming at the Horcules npartments alio was carried there. At first Mrs. Waldon was unconsclouo. but upon reviving, she became frantic from pain and screamed at tho top of her voice, as tho wagon sped along tho street. She was carried Into tho room occupied by her for somo lime, and within half a mln-uto mln-uto there was not a pollcoman to be seen. This. too. in spite of the fact that the unforlunato woman waa absolutely insane in-sane and could scarcely bo held at all. Two men and two women held her by main force for an hour after word had been sent to Holy Cross hospital for un ambulance. The woman fought and screamed In maniac fashion, scratching and biting. Her right arm was bare, except ex-cept for the splints that hold the broken member In place, am! the arm soon swelled to nearly twice Its normal size. When tho ambulance did arrive. It contained con-tained only the driver, and the task of carrying tho woman downstairs, placing her In tho wagon and caring for her during dur-ing tho trip to the hospital devolved upon the persons who had attended her in tho room, a servlco that should havo been performed by the police. For some weeks Mrs. Waldon has been acting (lueerly, und the broken arm Is ald to have been sustained by a fall on the pavement yostcrday. She has a daughter. Miss Llzslc Waldon, residing at Ely. Is'ev. There have been imbecile stories written writ-ten aud printed in tho Deserot Newt. but nothing to compare to this. The police department did everything in its powor to aid tho stricken woman. Thoy took her to tho.apartments which she occupied. People- in that apartmont received re-ceived her. No information was given the polico that sho was insane. Tho police ambulance- curried her to her place of abode. That is all thoy could do. The fact that an ambulance called from a hospital did not arrive for an hour after it was callod was no fault of the police. That department was not notified, henci it must be held blameless. The injured woman waa taken to a hospiial, not upon tho request of tho Descrct News, but upon tho request of a gentleman and his wife whom tho Deserot News almost daily denounces because they belong to the party which is in control of Salt Lake City. |
