Show ' . - I COMPLETION -OF MAIN STREET BUILDINGS 1 1 GIVES SECTION A METROPOLITAN ASPECT-1 i--ft wfWW-i BhS oPS B&S lisSSI With the completion of the now buildings on Main street, just north of the present McCornick building, the lower portion of the block north of First South v.'ill assume a truly metropolitan metro-politan appearance. Tho seven-story addition ad-dition to tho McCornick building, tho handsome Mclutyre building aud tho Calloway, Hoock & Francis building will for in a line of fireproof structures on the east side of Main street extending ex-tending one-fourth tho length of tho block. The present McCornick building has been standing for a number of years, and has been ono of the most attractive office buildings in the city until tho erection of the new structures farther down the stroot. Tho erection of an addition eighteen feet wido and soven stories high will not only givo an im- i proved appearance to the street but ; will affoct alrio tho convenience of the present buildiug. Tho outside of the structure will bo made to conform in aopearance to tho present McCornick building. The new structure will bo fireproof throughout, however, constructed of reinforced con- I creto and with a stone front. The lowor floorl with the mezzanine floor abovo it, will bo occupied by the music store or the Carstensen-Ansou company. Tho upper floors will contain twelve offices, which will be reached through the present pres-ent entrance to the building. As soon as tho new portion is completed the prcs-ont prcs-ont rear wall will bo broken through and tho ontiro structure above tho first two floors thrown into ono. Work ou this addition is already started in connection with tho work oh tho now Mclntyro buildiug, which will bo erected at tho eamo titne The Mclntyre building will be seven I stories in height, with a frontage of fifty feet and extending back 135 feet. The building will bo constructed entire- I Iv of concrete, including walls and I floors, and reinforced with steel. There . will be 150 offices, for which service will bo provided by two rapid-service I elevators. Tho lower floors will bo I arranged to be occupied as a store, and will bo provided with handsome plate glass windows for show purposes. Details of the construction of thi building indicate that it will bo unusually un-usually handsome, with a white stono front similar to the McCornick building. build-ing. Careful consideration -has been I given to tho architecture of the build- i ing by tho designer so that it will con- j form in appearance with tho other structures which will ad.ioiu it on each side. ! The Calloway, Hoock & Francis building has been . under construction for several months, and it was intended to be read- for occupancy by tho early spring. Tim building is only three stories in height, fifty feet wido and 135 feet deep. Like the Mclntyre building, it ig constructed entirely of concreto reinforced with steel, and is to be absolutely fireproof. Although built only three Btories high, arrangements arrange-ments havo been made wberebj' it will bo possible to increase tho height if it is thought advisable "without disturbing the rest of the building. The lower floor of this building is to ! bo occupied by the crockery firm of : Calloway, Hoock & Francis, which is i erecting tho building, and by William M. McConaba3 the jeweler. 'The upper floors will be used for a European hotel, and are already leased. All three off the buildings were de-signed de-signed by Ji. Klctting, architect. |
