Show ; SCIENTIFIC PROBLEMS Biology of Water Supplies Discussed j by Dr. Cardiff. 1 Or. I. X. CardllT of the department of biology of tho University, gave an inter- I cstlng Illustrated lecture upon tho "Bl- olofjy of Water Supplies" Wednesday j afternoon, before the medical and engl- ' ncorlnp: students of the school. The lec- I ture was thoroughly practical and anpre- ! elated by all who heard It. A striking I statement made was that 99 per cent of tho organisms which Injure water supplies sup-plies are plant and but one per cent animal. ani-mal. Tho damage dono by plants known as algae, Is not done while the plant lives, but upon death. lis remains decay and form the food upon which the bacteria bac-teria which produces disease, thrive. As a remedy for Impure water supplies, copper sulphato has been found to rank among the best. Hut an excess of the sulphate, bolter known as blue vltrol, be-yound be-yound what Is required to kill the plants. Is Itself Injurious to human beings. In order not to have an excess of sulphato an accurate analysis Is mado and just the right amount of. blue vltrol Is added. When one considers tho fact that there arc many different kinds of plants to bo killed and each requires a. different, quantity quan-tity to kill It, the nicety to which the modern chemist and scientist must work can be appreciated. The most sulphato that. Is required to kill some of these minute organisms Is one part of copper sulphate to ten thousand ports of water. Others require but a. millionth N part of this amount, to destroy them. The Idea that sewage emptying Into a lake will affect all tho lake wntip been proven erroneous. At Burlington, vt the water for the city Is drawn from the lake but threo miles from where the sewage Js discharged. It has I heen found by accurate microscopic an-: an-: alysls that the bacteria thriving In the sewage. are not found moro than half a mllo from tho point of discharge. dames H. Moyle will speak to the members mem-bers of the Political Science -loague this evening In the Assembly hall of the Museum Mu-seum building upon the Democratic view ol the tariff. Judge Frlck of tho Stato Supreme court gave the Republican version ver-sion of tho tariff two weeks ago. A general gen-eral Invitation is extended to all who are Interested In the matter. |
