Inspected and fumigated according ac-cording to law A lot of United States Government seeds, about 200 packages, were received and distributed and re-malled. re-malled. An article about spraying, which It Is essential should become generally known, 1 also incorporate In this roport for your consideration. Spraying, as now conducted, is of many grades and varieties. Most of tho spraying is done to clean the troes of Insect pests and to preserve the fruit from worms, scab and scale Hut there is still somo of the old style of work going on. which Is simply to spray to comply with tho law. never minding if it does any good or not. Rut that kind of work 1? napplly decreasing and in another an-other year or two will bo a curiosity to find. But there Is a great deal of work required to Instruct people how to spray, what to spray for, when to spray, and what formulas and remedies to use hi the different sprays for different pests, nnd how to mix up these formulas so they arc not spoiled In the making, always remembering re-membering that the formula of arsenic, though perfect for one class, Is useless for another. For this purpose it is a. necessity that the inspector or instructor Is thoroughly at. home and posted In thene matters himself, and years arc required re-quired to become an adept and thorough on all these questions, and In practice as well as In theory. The spraying that should be attended to from now, in I-'obrunry, until ihc buds begin to break here in Salt Kako and surrounding valleys should bo the po-called po-called winter spray. Thirty pounds of fresh lime put In a barrel, then add Jlf-teen Jlf-teen pounds of sulphur ou top of said lime, now add ten gallons of boiling wa ter. stir half a minute (look out so you don'l got lime In your eyes'), cover quickly with an old blanket or carpet. Invert n tub over tho top of the barrel, int. a weight on the top to keep tho lop from blowing off; now let Htand say one-half one-half hour, then fill your barrel with water wa-ter (the barrel to hold about forty gallons), gal-lons), strain and spray with It Pome advocate to boll the spray for an hour afterward, but If made properly It Is not needed. The heat, generated by the boiling boil-ing water slacking the lime Is so much stronger than ordinary boiling heat that boiling afterward Is only a waste of time, except you have steam to boll with under pressure. This mixture sprayed on a troo so il Is wot. all over will destroy all kinds of scale, especially the dreaded San .lose seal", tho elm scale, the cotton scale, the peach cur), the peach-twig borer, the wooly aphis, the eggs of tho green aphis; the red spiders it will destroy de-stroy by the millions. It will also destroy de-stroy fungus diseases and clcanso tho orchard from all petls that it can reach. The reason that all codling moth larvae and all borers arc not destroyed by this sprny is thai they are hidden nway under un-der the bark and in holes where nothing can reach them before the warm spring wonthcr causes them to como out. We have no sprny so generally effective for all purposes as tills llmc-sulphu'r spray. Wc used to. In old times, add ten pounds of salt, but experience shows that the salt Is not needed. L,lmo at 25 cents a bushel and sulphur at 3 cents a pound makes this effective spray very cheap say about H cents a gallon. |
