Show COWARDLY THUGS OISGRACMJNIFORM Detectives Locate Scoundrels Who Assault and Rob Harold Har-old Bernini. COLONEL L00KW00D RENDERS ASSISTANCE Six Disgraced Soldiers Awaiting Trial for Highway Robbery. One of the cleverest pieces of detective detect-ive work accomplished in months 1)3' the members of th police force was done j'esterda3- -when six soldiers stationed at Fort Douglas were arrested on the chargo of being implicated in the assault as-sault and robbery of Harold Bormm near the corner of Tenth East and Fourth South about 11 o'clock Wednesday Wednes-day night. The six men arrested arc Ralph Ord, James T. Lj-nch, Robert R. Jantis, Edwin N. Biencvnue, William .r. 0'Lear3' and Mike McCabe. The first four men were arrested at Fort Douglas, O'Lca- was taken in custodj' at the Miners' saloon several hours later, and McCabe was found al the Imperial rooming house on State street. When the officers returned to tho station sta-tion from the home of Bcrum about 1 o'clock Wednesda3' night thc3' were sat isfied that nothing more could he done until morning. Shortly aftor 8 o'clock 3'cstcrda3' morning tho conductor of the street car on which Bornim had gone home, appeared at tho station and in compan3' with Sergeant John Roberts, Detective R. L. Shannon and Officer Goorgc Mooro went at once to tho post. They applied to Col. Lockwood and informed in-formed him of their mission. That officer offi-cer at once sent for Capt. Wells and othor officers and together the3' had a consultation as to tho best way to find the men who were suspected. The conductor con-ductor wns satisfied that he could pick out at least one of tho men -who got off his car after Befrum had got off. Spotted His Man. Everj- officer and man at the post -was ready to go on tho parade ground, as it was muster day. From company to com-panj- tho conductor and an officer -went. Finally the conductor picked out a man and informed the officer that ho was ono of those who left his car at Tenth East and Fourth South street shorty- before the assault. The man was taken at once to tho officers' quarters, -whore he was told to at once divulge tho names- of his companions. In less than ten minutes min-utes tho three other mon -wore under arrest. ar-rest. It is claimed that all four admitted admit-ted that they left tho car at the point mentioned, but doniod that they had any part in tho assault or ro.bbor' of Berrum. It, took Col. Lockwood but a few seconds to learn that two other eoldiers had gotten off the car at the same time. A search for the two men revealed the fact that they had not returned re-turned to tho post: not only had thoj' failed to answer rollcall, but they were not present at muster. The names and a description of tho two men was secured, se-cured, and the officers returned to the city with their four prisoners. A few nunutos later men were sent from the post under instructions from Col. Lock-wood Lock-wood to tty nnd find the two missing men. Late -osterday afternoon Officer Tom Simpson located O'Lcary in the Miners' saloon on Second South street. Ho took the man to tho station, and from him learned that McCabe was at the Imperial rooming-house, where he arrested him a few minutes later. Both O'Learj- and McCabe wero undor the lnflucnco of liquor to such an extent that an attempt o question them was usoloss. It is known, however, that tho two went into a Second South street saloon at an earl3r hur yesterdaj' morning morn-ing and asked to look at tho morning paper. They retired to tho rear of the saloon, and after looking at the paper together for a minute or two, roturned it to the bartender and left the snloon. Mon Closely Questioned. The other four men wero closely questioned ques-tioned by the officers. Thev told ron-fiicting ron-fiicting stories. Though admitting that thC3r pot off the car, two of them ad mitted that they saw tho asault and ran away, but denied that thev took any part in it. These are believed to be tho two that ran north on Tenth East street and boarded a cy-bound car at the corner cor-ner of First South and Tenth East street. These two secured a transfer "for tho Kast Second South street from tho conductor, whom thev- are alleged ' to have told that hev did not mave any more money with which to pav their fare back to the po3t. One of the other two admits that he walked east as far as Mt. Olivet and that there ho took a car for the post. Tho statement of the conductor ot both tho First and Second South street lines tally with these statements. state-ments. The fourth man is believed to hnvc walked to the post. The other two. ns already stated made no effort, as far as is known, to reach the post either Wednesday night or Thursdu3" morning. A rcpresnlntive of The Tribune called on Mr. Berrum ycsteuLiy afternoon. His face and head still showed plainly the fearful beating to which ho had "been Bub.iected to. Two of his teeth and a largo quantity of blond was found on the sidewnlk yesterday morning at tho point where the assault occurred. Ber. rum stated that ho did not know just how man3' men attacked him; ho knew that there worn two striking him, one j whom he is satisfied he can identify a th.rd man was standing behind a tree close r,y, and ho is of tho opinion that there wei two r three other men within a short distance of where the attack was made '.Xt a CJime sp sudcu that I had little time think. I must have boon half dazed by. I he first blow that was delivered on thriback of my head." said Berrum. -x Miss Berrum 'si story. His daughter, Lillinn, who fainted when she saw the condition of her father last night, iuU ( into hysterics, made the following statement, state-ment, which was coroboratcd bv Mrs. Berrum: "We heard the car etoii at the corner, cor-ner, and a few seconds later mamma onened the 'door to sec if papa had got. off the car. Just then mamma heard a sound oa the other sidownlk and a voice. She called mo to the door and. asked mo if the cry did not sound like tho voice of papa. Just then I henrd the voice and started to run across the street calling, 'is that vou papa.' I snw soverul mon. Two of them ran to the corner West, and turned up Tenth Last street. One of them ran up the hill and anothor ono ran west and went towards the brewery, r heard papa's voice and yelled. I think 1 cried 'murder' or 'help' or something like that. Mamma came to my asis-tence asis-tence and together we got papa aoross the street and then T think' f fainted BlJnu0h,JiaPa lul ,00k F awful." Iho oflicers are confident that thev have made no mistake in the arrests made today and among the six men they have got tho one who committed Sn,,,M,TSit cowa?a!.v d dastard?? assaults that haponed in Salt.
