William Sherrlng of Hamilton, whsner of the great Marathon race at Atnens last spring, has recently been Interviewed upon crosscountry cross-country racing. "Hard and continuous - work," said Sherrlng, "Is the way we prepare for long road runs up around our way. Ono day it's a ten-milo run; the next fifteen miles lit a .slower clip; then twenty-five miles walking, then back to the run of ten miles again." In support, of this theory Sherrlng cited his own grand condition In the raccfrom Marathon to Athens last May. He worked every day for eight weeks before the games, running from ten to eighteen miles a day. with now and then a long walk substituted. In that time he dropped in weight from 131 to 112 pounds. There must be something In Sherring's Idea of hard training if condition counts for anything, any-thing, as his condition on the dav of tho big race In Greece was ono of tho marvels mar-vels of the Olympic games. Sherrlng completely outran the man on a bicycle, who carried his food and water during the big race. Tlmo and time again the little Canadian had to Beg the bicycle attendant not to quit, as the clip he set up the long hills from Marathon Mara-thon was too much for the bicyclist. Repeated Re-peated questions as to how lie felt Invariably In-variably brought forth a smiling response from the sweat-and-dust-covcred little athlete. At no time during the race was thero an.-: sign distress from Sherrlng. cither on his face or in his manner of running. His condition for the race may -fell bo described as perfect. Any man wno can outrun a bicycle over a hilly course of twenty-six miles must. Indeed, know how to prepan? himself for a long run. The day before the race Sherrlng ran a good stiff ten miles Sherring's "foat of -running from Marathon lo AthAbs surely the hardest course In the world Is the greatest long-dlsiance record the world has ever known, and In preparing for such a race in tho futuro athletes will do well to follow his training Ideas. |
