Show IGNORING PROOF. The distinguished Portland Oregonian asks: "Who can prove that Smoot places his obligations to tho Mormon church above his duty to Utah nnd the United States?" Who can prove that two and two arc four to a man who docs not believe that, two and two aro four or who docs not understand the use of words or the law of mathematics? During seventy 3cars tho Mormon church has been teaching in public and private that its prophet, seer, and reve-lator reve-lator is the voice of God to humanity and that to dispute or disobey him is to come under eternal condemnation. Its apostles aro selected, first, because of their known devotion to the hierarchy hie-rarchy in l.hc past, and the bcliof in thoir continued dovotion. A113' one of the apostles who refuses to obey his file leader is immediately dismissed from tho quorum. Any one of the apostles who does not rccoguizo that the prophet has a right to direct him in spiritual and temporal matters is pronounced pro-nounced to be out of harmon3 and is dropped in disgrace. There is not and there cannot he any dispute in Utah on this question. The facts aro as well known to all men as tho settlement nnd growth, the business security and tho promising future of Portland are known to the people of that great city. As well miirht some one who had neve- visited the mighty West, insist that there was no Portland and' that there was no Orogon, and demand proof, whilo denying that the testimony of all tho people of Portland and Oregon would bo accopted as proof as for the Portland Oregonian to ask proof of a thing that is known of all men here in the State of Utah, and that is onlj denied or r,uestionod by those who look at proof, dciy its existence and then demand proof. |
