Show 'VABISTY ATHLETES WORKING. Taking Up Different Athletic Pursuits For Class Honors. Athletic sports at the University, since the close of the regular footba'lt seasons, are along the interclnss lines rather than of an intercollegiate nature. 1 The sports are divided among football, basket-ball, handball and cross-country running, so that students of any athletic ability along a 113- of the above 'lines will have an opportunity to show his prowess. prow-ess. There is plenty of material in the school to make excellent, class teams for the various sports. In interclnss football, indications are that the sport will be confined to the lower classes. A silver trophy is offered to the class winning the interclass series. This will give decided impetus to the fight between the lower classes for the championship. Three games will be played between the freshmen and sophomores to settle the ownership of the trophy. The sophomores have had two full teams out during the past week. From these they should secure plenty of material ma-terial for a good squad. Harry Bove-ndge Bove-ndge will undoubtedly call their sigunls irom quarter In the back field Dver. Cannon and Turner show decided abil-lty abil-lty at rushing the ball along. The freshmen have so far confined tJieir entrance to the gamo to talk, but they have so much material to draw from that they ought to be able to produce pro-duce a first-class team that should make things interesting for the sophomores. Roberts and Hall from tho Highschool, Tracy from Ogdcn and Price from the Spnngvillc Highschool arc some of tho more promising men. Of last years props., Judd, Taylor, Brinton and Smith have, declared their support for the freshman team Tho upper classmen will go in for basketball. They are doing this in order or-der to introduce the sport into the school. At present there is no basketball basket-ball team representing the University. By first showing that there is plenty of material to make a good team to represent tho school, thev hope to securo permission from the ath'lctic committeo to organize a regular "U" basket-ball team next vear. The seniors have a number of good men who will represent them. Ballard has had some experience at center. His great height would give him first chanco lit the ball on the toss. Besides Ballard, Bal-lard, I'crron, Smith, Bailey nnd Fcrgu-so" Fcrgu-so" have had considerable practice. Hie freshmen and sophomores may decide to enter the basket-ball scries. J his would, of course, add more interest inter-est to the contests. Tracy, Hall, Roberts and Anderson have already expressed a desire to look after the freshman end of the sport. At handball the contests will be arranged ar-ranged as a. school championship, in singles and doubles. The contest in singles sin-gles would, in all probability, narrow rviW" 0 Moore' Bennion, Kiissell and Pitt. In the doubles, team work would bo required, and hence more interest in this series would bo developed. McycrhofiTer and Simpson, (-mip and Bailey, Bennion and Brown and Moore nnd Pitt are somo of the strong teams who have an excellent opportunity- to win first placo in the doubles. The first run of tho cross-country club will be made over tho three-mile course next Tuesday. Captain Dale Pitt of tho track team will lead tho way until a regular captain of tho club is choson. Over twenty-five men havo alreadj' registered reg-istered to noin the club. Among them aro Poberts, Hall, Tracy and Price, all former Highschool students doing freshman fresh-man work in the School of Mines. The upper classes are equally well represented. repre-sented. For the last two years the interclass cross-country runs have been won by the preps. Two years ago Hume and Raiischcr- won first and Kecond places for the prcps. and last eur Ferguson and Scott carried off tho honors for the same class. Cross-country running is an excellent moans by which the members of the track team usually get into good sh ipe before the regular season opens. The long-distance runners such as Bailey, Bai-ley, Niolson and Scott havo all joined the club, and Coach Maddock expects to have all tho trnck men enrolled be-foro be-foro tho new year begins. |
