That marplot organ of Smoot. guided more by zeal to draw subsidy than by either knowledge of facts or discrimination discrimina-tion in their use, continues to publish in flaring lines a statement marie by a prominent attorney, of long Ropublican experience in Salt Lake, avowiug his belief that a trade was mad6 between certain Republican leaders of the country coun-try and the Mormon hierarchy for political po-litical favors. Tho pretended purpose of the incessant inces-sant republication of this matter, in the Srnootito organ, is to remove the suspicion sus-picion of such a bargain and refute the sentiment of the Ropublican lawyer. law-yer. But as is usual with tho lucubrations lucubra-tions of that sheet, exactly the contra ry effect is produced; for men who wero. not at all inclined to tho idea that a bargain had been mado aro becoming suspicions, and those who wero merely suspicious are becoming convinced. The various events which were predicted from time to time as the bargained results of tho compact are merely emphasized em-phasized by the incessant iteration in the Smoot columns of tho salient part of that Republican lawj'er's utterance. As is usual with that misleading journal, jour-nal, it insists upon placing an absolutely abso-lutely false construction upon the language lan-guage which it quotes although that is of no particular importance in this case oxcept as showing the utter inability of tho sheet to affilintc with the truth. Tho Bepulican lawyer spoke of leadors of the Republican party who had mado a bargajn with the Mormon hierarchy, and the Smootite sheet singles out tho name of President Roosevelt and insorts it in the argument in a cold-blooded attempt at-tempt to defraud its readers thereby trailing President Roosevelt into ' the t case and awakening suspicion concerning concern-ing him which did n6t thorctoforo exist. ex-ist. Tho awkwardness of the Smoot organ in this matter is as noticeablo as its own Democratic joke on itself, when it printed an atrocious picture of President Presi-dent Roosevelt ns a nudo fakir charming charm-ing his cobra snakes, one of which, under his charm, was striking its fangs into tho American eagle. |
