Thp officials undpr the present State administration, while prating reform and tnlking of reducing expenses, never lose sight of one thing that is, an increase in their own salaries. Governor Cutler in his message told the Legislators that the State was run-nine run-nine away behind; that its expenses largely exceed the revenue: thnt. during the next two years it would run three-quarters three-quarters of ,i million of dollars in debt unless some now source or means was devised to raise revenue. In tho faco of this tbc State Board of Equalization asks for a raise in salary. On Thursday several members of the State board, including Orange J. Salisbury, Salis-bury, chairman of tho board and also chairman of th church Republican State committee, and J. J. Thomas held a conference with the Judiciary committee com-mittee of the House, tho object, being to have the salaries increased from $S00 for each member to $2000 for each member per annum. No definite conclusion was arrived at, but it is understood thai a bill will be introduced incorporating Lh proposed pro-posed increase of salary. Whether it will get. through the Legislature is another an-other matter. |
