Steady Elimination of Doubtful Districts Dis-tricts Doubt in Favor of the Bepublicans. NEW YORK. Nov. 1. The next House of Representatives will be Republican beyond doubt, according to conservative estimates. There are plenty of doubtful districts scattered all over the United States, but not enough to give the Democrats Dem-ocrats much of a. chance of wiping out the existing- Republican majority of thirty-four in a total membership of USC in the popular branch of Congress, On the contrary, a Republican majority major-ity of from twenty to forty is figured out. Doubt Is Eliminated. During the last sixty days there has been a steady elimination of doubtful districts and in almost every case the doubt haa been settled in favor of the Republican candidate, the lights In the Congressional districts following cloyely on the heels of the Presidential campaign. cam-paign. A conservative estimate gives the Republicans Re-publicans 1S9 to 157 Democrats, and forty districts doubtful. This Indicates not less than twenty majority In the next House of Representatives, and there Is every Indication that It may run as high as forty, although the latter figure Is probably extravagant On the whole, there will not be a great deaj of change from the representation of the two parties In the present House. Republican Gains Reported. All the reports Indicate slight Republican Repub-lican gains In the Congressional districts in New York City, one or two In Chicago, Chi-cago, one In Minnesota, a possible gain In Iowa of a single district, another Indicated In-dicated Grain In Ohio, and possible losses of isolated districts In Wisconsin, Colorado Colo-rado and gains will nearly balance. According to current reports, the present pres-ent prospect of the Republicans securing secur-ing the next House of Representatives is made practically certain, because, on figuring up the reasonably sure Republican Repub-lican districts, throughout the country, It is found that the total Is within five of a majority of the House. Basis for Estimate. This estimate Is based on reports showing that there are now forty districts dis-tricts In the Northern States which can be fulrly considered doubtful. . In at least a third of these doubtful districts. If not half, the chances favor the Republicans, and thus a majority for that party la clearly forecasted so far as anything can be Indicated in advance ad-vance of the actual counting of the bal-lots. |
