Show POISON IVY LINE RIMlLLi II. F. las Completed Its Purchase, Rockefeller Comes to Aid of Harriman in Eliminating Disturber. r Details of Overland Plan to Rid Trans-Missouri of Independent Lino and Got Into Chicago. Special to Tho Tribune. ST. PAUL, Minn., Nov. 1. Vague rumors ru-mors to the effect that the Union Pacific Pa-cific is trying to gain possession of the Chicago & Great Western in order to put a quietus on periodic disturbances of rates east of the Missouri river, which have been traced to that road, have been circulated for the past month, hut today the first definite news of the deal was reported. Union Pacific Gets Road. It was given out at Great Western headquarters that tho road was under option to the Union Pacific, or hud actually been sold. President Stlckney of the Great Western denied the rumored ru-mored sale several days ago, but his denial was denied and was couched In words that would admit of a liberal construction. In making the denial President Stlckney said that there was nothing In the report, and that the road would continue its policy of getting the business by the methods that have proved aggravating to competitors. Rockefeller Aids Harriman. It Is also definitely stated that John D. Rockefeller has been acting- with Harriman ln the Union Pacific bull deal in Wall street, and the Interests of tho Standard Oil chieftain are Identical with thoix? of Harriman ln the present matter. mat-ter. Rockefeller Interests control the Milwaukee Mil-waukee and as that road Is a competitor of the Great Western the removal of the line from the field of competition would be desirable from the Rockefeller viewpoint. view-point. Great Western Stock Booms. On October 1 Great Western common stock sold ln Wall street at $1G a share, and as it Is considered certain that dividends divi-dends could never bo paid on the stock on account of the size of the preferred issues having- precedence over It. the common ' was avoided as an investment and was Invaluable at present on account of Its voting powers. Since October 1 Great Western common had soared from $16 a share to nearly $2S, and during dur-ing tho past nine days the transactions have footed up 233,900 shares and at least half a million during the month. Fits Into U. P. System. More Important still Is the unique position po-sition of the Chicago & Great Western. Look It up ln the map nnd It will be seen that It fits In with the Union Pacific Pa-cific as if constructed for the Overland Route. It will be seen that with It the Union Pacific can secure tho most direct di-rect route of all from Omaha to Chicago and from Kansas City to Chicago, with good lines to Minneapolis and St. Pattl. This Is the reason why the Union Pacific Pa-cific let go of the Alton and immediately took up with the Great Western. It has always been the rate disturber dis-turber because It maintained It" Independence, Inde-pendence, but that Is where Stlckney was wise. If he sells It will be for a fortune for-tune gained by every stockholder. |
