Show COL. HOLMES'S POSITION. The following from Col. E. F. Holmes is self-explanatory. He has been In many influential quarters mentioned as a probable or p'oRslble candidate for Governor of Utah this year, and a large number of friends have exprensod their friendliness to him as a oandl-dntc. oandl-dntc. Ah my name has been prominently montloned In connection with tho office of Governor of tills State, I will thus publicly pub-licly stnto that I am not, never havo been or over will bo an aotlvo enndidato for any oftlco whatevor, and havo as yot expressed ex-pressed no opinion as to the office, or criticism of any policy. I recognize, as any good American must, that no citizen has tho right to refueo to servo tho people If called upon to do so, and certainly ono cannot rofuso that which has not been tendered. At tho same time, as ono swallow docs not mako a Hummer, no more does tho expression of a few of ono's frlonds vofco a public sontiment. There aro in this State many citizens of ability, ablo and willing to servo tho public, who have lived here many years and fully onjoy tho confidence of tho people, peo-ple, and it would bo tho greatest pro3ump-tlon pro3ump-tlon on my part to oron nsplro to such honor. E. F. HOLMES. |
