Show IMPORTANT RULING IN LAND CASE A decision was handed down yesterday yester-day by the general land ollko at Washington Wash-ington reversing the findings of the local lo-cal land office in the case of tho United States vs. the State of Utah, Involving Jhc.UUa ta ayer. EWO ceres p land ad. Jacent to Huntington canyon, near Huntington, Utah. It appears the State of Utah selected this land under Its grant for the benefit of the State Agricultural college. In August, 1002. Subsequently the Govern- ( ment was led to bcllevo that the land had been selected at the Instance and for the benefit of a resident coal company. com-pany. Special Agent II. V. A. Ferguson Fergu-son was sent here to make an investigation, investi-gation, which resulted in his report to tho effect that the lands contained vast quantities of valuable coal, and that the selection by the State had been made for the purpose of obtaining these I valuable coal deposits. Upon tho spe-I spe-I cial agent's report the Government ordered or-dered a hearing, which was had last September, resulting in a decision in favor of the United States and against the State of Utah, and directing a cancellation can-cellation of the State selection. The case was then carried by appeal to the general land office, by the attorneys for the State, HIgglns & Senior, with tho result that tho decision of the register and receiver ls reversed and affirming the contention of the State that such lands were properly selected under Its said irrant |
