Show THE E 311 A FThE ALIA FLA. Th following, from our Little Cottonwood Cot-tonwood correspondent, was received yesterday, thouih it should have reached the night before: Aita City, May 9, 1573. Editor i Herald : The Emma fire was fortunately not c-0 diastroti3 ts was first supposed. There is none of the machinery impaired, impair-ed, and had they the lumber oa hand to erect their buildinc., not a trace of the fire could be seen in three days. Work-cien Work-cien were busy yesterday removing the rub&iah. The smoke stack is already erected, and the boiler wili be placed in pc-ition to-day; by to-morrow morning morn-ing everytbiag will be running as m-uah The fire was caused by the spontaneous combustion of some cartridges of giant powder. The powder waa frozen and had been placed ou or near the boiler, to thaw; the temperature proved too hiijh for it, when it ignited and went on with a noise like a lighted fuse, or tfjuiueoi powuer, scattering the nre iu the rear of the boiler. The timber being dry as tinder easily ignited, aod before the men were hardly aware what had happened, the whole end of the building was in flames. The weather is beautiful and pleasant; pleas-ant; the snow is rapidly disappearing. As. it settles on the main street of Aita, it reveals garbage, decayed vegetables, old bottles, tin cans, rawhides, ox heacs, ox paunches, deceased dogs, slops, and dirt from the stores, saloons and restaurants, that have been thrown out dur.ng the winter. This delightful delight-ful compound emita anything but an interesting stench about noon, after the warm rays of the sun have had a good chance. We wish it would thaw suddenly sud-denly and remove this stuff from the streets, and let it be purified in the waters of Little Cottonwood creek. Of course, we will have more snow; we expect it, and are prepared for it. We are tough "cusses" up here, aud a lit-tie lit-tie snow does not disturb our tranquility. tranquil-ity. Abcdidald. |
