Show ANOTHER ENOCH ARDEN In This Case the Woman Turns Up Unexpectedly AND D A TASKER IS ARRESTED ON A CHARGE OF BIGAMY Believing His First Wife Was Dead He Married Lulu Swenson and Eighteen Months Afterwards i Mrs Tasker No1 Returns Very I Much Alive iAn i-An old man named D L Tasker was I arrested yesterday afternoon by Deputy Depu-ty Sheriff Andy Burt on a charge of bigamy The complaining witness is Mrs Sarah H Tasker the flrst wife of the accused Tasker was unable to secure bonds and was placed in the county jail where he now remains I pending his preliminary hearing There appears to be no doubt that he married I mar-ried another woman while he was the lawful husband of the woman who makes the complaint but Tasker says Ii he transgressed the law unwittingly as he believed his first wife was dead at the time he contracted the second marriage The old man was seen by a Herald reporter in his quarters in the jail last night and talked very freely and with apparent frankriess He said Yes its true I am married to two women I married Lulu Swenson in Salt Lake two years ago in the belief that my first wife was dead She wasnt however how-ever as about six months ago she turned up in Salt Lake and since has made life a burden to me and I feel better tonight in this prison cell than I have since I knew she was alive Matters have come to a crisis and will now be settled one way or another Technically I am guilty but I had no intention of doing wrong and if I have to go to jail I can go and get it over TASKERS STORY His stbry in substance was that he was an engineer and lived at Pueblo Colo for many years By hard work and industry he accumulated sufficient money to buy a little home the deeds to which were made out in the name of his wife Sarah H Tasker His health failed him and he was no longer able to work at hard manual man-ual labor and in 1891 he left his home and came to Salt Lake in search of some kind of employment which his physical condition would permit of his engaging in For want of something better to his taste he took a job in a policy shop and wrote his wife to come here and join him To his letters he says he received no reply and after a time learned that his wife had sold their home in Pueblo and all their effects ef-fects and gone awny whither he was at that time unable to discover He made dilligent efforts to find her and I spent a good deal of money in the I search and finally learned that she was in Texas and had made an extensive tour of the southern states He then communicated with his wifes brother in Dallas Texas and he says he received re-ceived a letter from him in August I 1894 stating that Mrs Tasker was dead but he failed to get any information informa-tion regarding what had become of the money which Mr Tasker had realized from the sale of their home and which he said would probably amount to over a thousand dollars MARRIED LULU SWENSON Believing that the report of his wifes death true he felt himself free to contract con-tract a second marriage if he felt so disposed and in November in 1894 he married Lulu Swenson anti has lived with her ever since They have one child now 15 months old Hd had no children by his first wife y 41 I 1 < i About six months ago to his great I surprise his first wife turned up in Salt Lake and demanded that he support I sup-port her In view n her conduct in selling their home and remaining away until the money realized therefrom was spent he declined to have anything any-thing to do with her and he says she has been a thorn in his side ever since Mrs Tasker No 2 is at present in Ogden and was apprised of her husbands hus-bands arrest by mail last night He I has employed Attorney J E Darmer I to defend him and expects to get bonds so that he can havehis liberty pending pend-ing his trial The warrant for his arrest was issued about three weeks ago but he was out of the city and returned only a day or two ago and was working in a policy shop on Commercial street at the time I of his arrest |
