Show THEY HAD A HOT TIME Scenes at the St Louis City Convention REPUBLICANS WERE WILD DEMOCRATS WENT ATIT HAMMER = HAM-MER AND TONGS Three Hundred Delegates Were About Evenly Divided and Free I Fights Were Indulged in All Over I the Hall Biot Call Sent to Police I Headquarters and Seventeen or Eighteen Arrests Made St Louis Mo March Republican and Democratic city conventions were held here today The Republicans nominated nomi-nated Henry Zlegenhein unanimously forma for-ma or He is the choice of Chauncey I Filley the recognized leader of Republican Republi-can municipal politics and the remainder of the ticket Is of the same character When the Democratic convention assembled as-sembled at Masonic hall Dr Frank Lutz for the Harrison men and Hon Sterling Bond a Meriwether man ascended the platform and both called the convention to order A tumult ensued The SuO delegates were About evenly divided and free lIght5 were indulged in all over the hall A riot call was sent to police headquarters and the police tried in vain to quiet the delegates Assistant Chief of Police Kiely personally arrested Mr Bond but this only increased tho furore Neither faction gained the ascendency When Mr Bond was released on bond he returned to the hall and amid all the din appointed the committees Again he and then was forced from the platform conducted business from a press table Meantime the Harrison people adjourned ad-journed until 4 p m When they left the hall Mr Meriwether was nominated receiving re-ceiving 155 votes with 72 for Noonan and 7 for Brown At this juncture the Harrison Harri-son men returned guarded by 150 policemen police-men The Meriwether delegates were unceremoniously un-ceremoniously forced out but not without with-out strong resistance They secured the Druids hall l a block away and completed their ticket The Harrison faction also named a full ticket Seventeen arrests were made |
