Show A TARIFF WAR Thai this country may yet involve itself in a tariff war with several European Eu-ropean countries is not at all improbable improb-able Already the Dingley bill has called out protests from foreign ambassadors am-bassadors in Washington though it is not likely that they will be given any great heed seeing that the protests of the American people are ndt Those who insist on high duties no matter what the consequences may be retort when it Is urged that they may induce retaliatory legislation by other nations that this country contains within itself all the elements of selfsupport and that nature has made us independent of any other country so far as supplying sup-plying our wants is concerned GrantIng Grant-Ing that this is true what is to be done with those things that are produced in tails country in excess of the demands of the American people If those countries upon which we depend to take our surplus we are not indep J dent d-ent of foreign countries when we attempt tempt to linde with them adopted the c a 1 prohibitive tariff policy of the Ding y bill and apply it to American goods I and products the American people 1 would find it a most inconvenient thing Those nations that are desirous of trading with the United States will I seek to satisfy their wants elsewhere And trade once alienated by individual j individu-al firms or by nations is not easily regained I re-gained Could there be a more sense i Jess thins than for this country to adopt a policy halt will drive trade from it and to make enemies of those who are now friends Such is the tendency of the tariff policy the country I coun-try is abtiut to enter upon There are those in this country who seem to delight in alienating all friendly feeling of foreigners for it who seem to think that it shows more patriotism to make enemies than to cultivate friends To some extent they are possessed of the idea that the United sates are bigger than all the rest of the world combined And unfortunately un-fortunately they are gaining influence A tariff war with other countries would be almost as bad as a physical war and the same care should be exercised ex-ercised to avoid it |
