Show I WORK OF A MANIAC HORRIBLE TRAGEDY IN OAK I HORRILE I OA I LAND RHODE ISLAND I Triple Murder Man Woman and Child to Which is Added Arson to Hide the Crime Pascoag R I April 14A horrible I tragedy was enacted early this morning morn-ing at the home of Edward Reynolds on the Elisha Iathe son place near I Sweethill in the town of Oakland Mrs Reynolds her husband and an j I adopted daughter Servilla were brutally murdered and the house was j then set on fire presumably to cover j I the crime Martin Mowery the hired man employed by the Reynolds who j is undoubtedly a raving maniac was i found hiding In a barn near Oakland i and at once placed under arrest The neighbors were aroused by the fire On I reaching the house it was found securely se-curely fastened with doors bolted and windows locked They forced an entrance en-trance and in so doing found evidence crime of a murder with arson to hide the I Mrs Reynolds body mutilated and bloodstained was taken from her bed by those who were the first to enter the house the flames from that part I of the house burning spread so quickly that a search for the other members of the family who were supposed to be I there could not be made Hours afterwards after-wards when the ruins of the house I had sufficiently cooled the charred bodies of 11 Reynolds and the young girl were found I In the meantime the local and state police had been searching for Mowery the hired man and he was found in I the barn chattering unintelligibly The neighbors who first arrived found that the house had been saturated with coal I oil thoroughly so that the flames spread with marvelous rapidity and I they had only time to take Mrs Reynolds body out before that sec j tion of the house was in a blaze From 1 what could be judged from the appearance I I ap-pearance of her body a brutal murder I had been committed The head had I been crushed in evidently by an ax I and the upper part of the body was horribly mutilated Those who brought i out the body Say the bed which she occupied was covered with blood An I attempt was made to locate Reynolds body but it did not appear to be in the room Martin Mowery the man who worked I for Reynolds slept in another part of the house and the villagers hurried to his room to alarm him The room was I empty and from the hasty examination I examin-ation that could be made it was evi I aton dent that the bed had not been disturbed dis-turbed The bed clothing as well as the floor I leading to the door had been saturated I with kerosene An empty oil can was found In the room Mowerys trunk I and a box belonging to him were open and his clothing was strewn about the I floor I From the position of the bodies it is believed that Reynolds was called to I his daughters room by some unusual i sound and that when he reached the I side of the bed he received his deathblow j dEath-blow At that time Miss Reynolds was probably killed The murderer it is I supposed then went to M Reynolds room and after stabbing her twice in the face battered her head in 1 When Mowery left the house he went went to the woods where he shot himself in the head The ball only stunned him however and he did not repeat the attempt at-tempt The revolver with two cham bern empty was found in his possession posses-sion and an empty oil can was found in Mowerys apartment Mowery was willing to talk after his arrest This afternoon Medical Examiner Wilcox held a autopsy on the three I victims of the tragedy The doctors made D careful examina I tion of the body of Mrs Reynolds and found a deep wound on the head made by the butt of a musket while there were no less than seven bayonet wounds on the body The musket and bayonet were both found in the ruins of the fire Immediately after the au topsy had been completed Judge Spears I of the district court signed a warrant for the arrest of Mowery and he was at once brought into court for arraignment arraign-ment He pleaded not guilty and was committed to jail without bail to await the preliminary trial on April 21 The only thing like a confession made by Mowery tonight was when Dr Wil cox told him he proposed to etherize him and then extract the bullet which Is now in his head Mowery said I wont be etherized You think if you get me that way I will tell my whole story |
