Show CONTINUES TO RISES RISE-S Along the Louisiana L vees Acute Memphis Tenn April HThe river continues to rise at Vicksburg and all points south and the situation along the Louisiana system of levees is acute The waters are being hurled gulfward with tremendous force and several thousand men are working and watching watch-ing night and day in one grand effort to hold the embankments intact I Reports from the overflowed Mississippi Missis-sippi delta tonight are not encouraging encourag-ing The expected fall in the waters that extend for miles and miles over the fertile valley has not occurred Many well known planters express the fear that the yellow stream will not recede until June too late to plant this years crop Much suffering still exists in the sunflower sun-flower and bogue phalia country where hundreds of families have deserted their cabins and are huddled on high grounds On a plantation ten miles west of Helena Sylvester Sanders a colored tenant his wife and five chil dren were overwhelmed by the current and all perished Near Greenville today to-day two negroes were drowned in an attempt to reach dry land Word reached Vicksburg during the day that many negroes were in imminent immi-nent peril at Davi island where the break in a private levee occurred yesterday yes-terday and a relief steamer was immediately imme-diately dispatched to the island Throughout t the overflowed district rain fell in torrents last night At Helena the downpour was of such violence that great pumps were put to work in the lower part of the city The water gained so rapidly that the pumps had to be abandoned as impracticable The whole of the southern part of Helena is under water from one to four I feet deep and those who had provider themselves with boats were fortunate The pumps were started up again tonight to-night and it is expected that the water will be thrown out of the streets in three or sour days The work of relieving the flood sufferers suf-ferers with the government funds appropriated ap-propriated by congress for that purpose pur-pose is progressing smoothly In the two districts extending from Memphis to Cairo and from Memphis to Helena local relief stat nsrhavc been established estab-lished and placed in charge of respon 1 < r O JA r < sible men Nothing remains to be done in these districts except to ship supplies sup-plies every week to the relief stations SO far nO relief stations have been definitely nitely T tablishedin any of the districts below Helena but the army officers who have been sent IntO these districts on a tour of inspection are expected to report within a few days Whenthes relief stations are fixed the army officers of-ficers will be able to supply the needs of all the flood sufferers in the entire overflowed country I Prison Farm a Lake Leavenworth Kan April HThe river has risen a foot since yesterday noon and is 4S8 higher than Tit any time anY tme since 1891 When the pontoon bridge went out thjs morning it carried out a portion of the Rock Island tracks l This road and the Chicaso Great Western are compelled to Ue the Burlington tracks A large part of the Fort Leavneworth reservation on the Missouri side is under un-der water and the federal prison farm on the Kansas side is covered with lakes The wateiis encroaching on Still ings the viag A cross from Leaven worth Several families have been forced to move Reached the Danger Line Kansas City Mo April HThe Missouri I Mis-souri river reached the danger line of 21 feet at 230 oolock thisafternoon and is rising more rapidly than on Tuesday in spite of Its greater width An additional addi-tional rise of one foot is predicted by Friday npon I Belief Board Memphis April 4The Christian 1 Herald 0 New York which is edited by the Rev T De Witt Talmage will i i send a relief board down the river from I Memphis I George A Semman a representative i of the Christian Herald has come to I this city from New York in order to conduct this expedition Yesterday i Mr Semman chartered the tug Welcome I Wel-come and bought two tons of provisions for her cargo Thursdaymorning the Welcome will start Another Wet Blanket Greenville Miss 7 April 14 Another I wet blanket was thrown over the Mississippi Mis-sissippi valley tOda when the weather bureau rainfall report reached here This makes even the most sanguine planters give in The water will not go off before June 15 Above the Bscord New Orleans April 14The river here today rose to 1S7 feet which is eight I tenths of a foot aboe the record Arise recor rise of threetenths came within a few hours at high tide The sudden Increase throws water over the sack line damag ing goods awaiting shipment and acts as an incentive to pile up packs I F |
