| Show BOOKS AND AUTHORS Some of the Famous Forthcoming Novels V A NEW BOOK ON CARLYLE The Mother Goose Question Settled George Parsons Lathrop Miss Gabrielle Gree ley Magazines and Papers NcwYonK April 16 1891Special correspondence cor-respondence of THE HERALD Anew book upon Carlyle is one of the appetizing treats that will soon be announced publication in the coming summer or autumn It is by a bright young German author Dr Ewald Flugel of the university of Leipsic who is not only PrivatDocent in that university but who has an editorial place on TJicAnglia a German periodical devoted to English philosophy and literary studies The English Eng-lish translation of this work has been carefully care-fully and gracefully made by Miss Jessica Gilbert Tyler the beautiful and accomplished accom-plished young daughter of Professor Moses Coit Tyler of Cornell university Many books and studies have been devoted de-voted to Carlyle but none of them fills exactly ex-actly the field which has tempted our learned German author As 1 have been permitted to examine the MS of this English Eng-lish translation I have no hesitancy in saying say-ing that its appearance will be one of the literary events of the year PROFESSOR FLUGEL DOES NOT REPEAT the biography which wo all know but going over the entire series of Carlyles contributions to literature sociology and affairs of state deduces therefrom his moral II and religious status A book which has been recently issued here in a limited edition and therefore scarcely known or noticed is the original Mother Gooses Melody as first printed by John Newbury of London in 1760 and reprinted by IssiahThomas of Worcester Massachusetts in 17S5 No childs book if we except Robinson Crusoe and the Swiss Family Robinson which it may not be needful to except has ever had a wider voeueor been endeared to more readers read-ers than tho one containing the familiar nonsense rhymes of Mother Gooso With this edition which edited by Mr William H Whitmore the noted historical scholar of Boston he has given us twentyeight pages of historical and bibliographical notes Mr Whitmore very easily explodes the false notion which is still prevalent that the MOTHER GOOSES MELODIES originated from an alleged Mother Ver goose of Boston whose soninlaw one Fleet was said to have first printed The truth which Mr Whitmore makes apparent is that the Mother Goose literature like Topsey is a growth and has probably comedown come-down to us through countless generations The first definite trace 01 it between the covers of a book is tobe found in the Con to du Terns Passe de Ma Mere iOjyc by Peryaultwhich appeared long ago in Paris From Paris Newbury got it and while in his hands Oliver Goldsmith who is suppose Ito I-to be the author of Goody TwoShoes no doubt added new rhymes to it Isaiah Thomas of Worcester and the printer Fleet of Boston gathered it up without doubt from Newbury As the book telling all this is limited to merely one hundred copies very few of the thousands who have read this famous dames delicious nonsense will ever know or dream of its origin except as it leaks out in STATEMENTS LIKE THIS of the very few who have especially examined ex-amined Mr Whitmores cogent and conclusive conclu-sive argument Thepassage of Mr George Parsons Lath rop and his wife who is the daughter of Nathaniel Hawthorne from Protestant belief be-lief to tho Catholic faith was the occasion for some reporters effusive discnption in the Boston press Mr Lathrop is one of the prominent authors and managers of tho Authors club here an d is a very bright and companionable gentleman His home is only occasionally in this city as he often skips away to pursue his literary studies to some provincial town Another item which may be called literary liter-ary is the announced engagement and forthcoming marriage of Gabrielle Greeloy to the pastor of her church near Chappa qua If the rumor is premature and unauthorized unau-thorized I should rather contradict than circulate it but the pastor or President for that matter is to be congratulated who has made or can make SO DELIGHTFUL A CONQUEST Miss Greeley is Horace Greeleys only surviving sur-viving child The children of his deceased daughter Ida who was Mrs Nicholas Smith were a son Horace Greeley without with-out the Smith who is fourteen or sixteen years of agea very handsome and intelligent intelli-gent boyand two girls who are younger Mr Moncure D Conway has been spending spend-ing a good deal of earnest study of late over tho history of George Washington and other Washingtons He finds that one Arthur Washington came to Virginia in 1636 a thing not before suspected Ho has in fact added much to what we know of the father of his country all of which will no doubt ultimately appear in book form New novels by the writers most in fashion fash-ion now are announced as follows Mr Rudyard Kiplings will be called Mother Maturin Mrs Humphrey Wards
