| Show SHUT THE SALOONS A few weeks ago the city marshal spurred on by the demands of the decent people made a dash towards closing the liquor saloons on Sunday and was eminently emi-nently successful For two or three Sundays Sun-days the ginmills and dives kept their doors shut and blinds down greatly to the pleasure of the lawabiding Sabbathre specting members of the community Before that saloon doors had been swing ing on Sunday almost as freely a on other days there was noisy carousing in barrooms bar-rooms and churchgoers not Infrequent encountered drunken men on the streets spectacles to which Salt spectcles Lake eyes were unaccustomed while the array of drunks before the police justice was larger on Monday mornings than usual Latterly the police restrictions havo been relaxing and we are told that matters are steadily drifting back into the old disgrace rti condition of things Saloons arc not t run so openly as inrmeny yet it is sam I that the thirsty and the bibulous experience I experi-ence no difficulty in obtaining what they want side doors being open i those in front are shut It is also observable that the Monday morning levees in the police court are well attended by the bleareyed soaks rounded up during the previous day and evening Now inability to enforce the ordinance cannot be pleaded I has been demonstrated demon-strated that the saloons can be closed on I j Sunday and respect for the laW and for public sentiment maintained Nor does it require extraordinary exertion on the part of the officials Heretofore about I all that was necessary to close Jfront and side doors was a notice by the marshal that a violation of the ordinance kv ould subject the would salooukeeper to arrest and prosecution Similar warning would have the same effect now i the liquor seller understands that tho marshal is in earnest and means business her is a certain element which wants the Sunday saloon and would be delighted delghted j If this city could be l ciy transformed into a j mining camp In so far as the disregard of I I the Christian Sabbath is concerned but I the marshal must be aware that that ele I ment is in the insignificant minority the masses of this mases community being earnestly and honestly opposed not only to earnest Sunday saloons but to Sabbath desecration of every kind He knows that in efforts to eforts compel obedience to the laws which have been enacted in the i interest of peace good order Christianity and decency on the first day of the week he will be supported by all the good people of the city regardless of tiolitics poUtcs and in suite 01 tue partisan hates which manifest them selves so strikingly a to other measures TUB HERALD is not going to scold the marshal this morning It is merely going to remind him that people have noted signs of slackened energy on his part in regard to Sunday saloons and arc asking why it is They are wondering how it happens that saloons are not as tightly closed now as they were a few weeks and ago they are saying that they expect him to do his duty by tho better element of the community unless he can show good reason why ho should not or cannot do it |
