COMMENDABLE A notice appears in this issue of THE HERALD announcing that after May 1 the retail stores of Z C 11 I will bo open to the public only between tho publc hours of 8 a m and 0 We pm regard this a a proper movement and believe the patrons of the great commercial establishment will wi heartily approve of the change There has never been any good reason why our stores should remain open until 8 or 9 oclock at night as many of them do Of course so long as this rule is followed there will be more or less trading in the evening but If i the merchants would close their cose stores earlier the pubic would be pleased with the new rule As we understand i 1 tho Coop has been led into this late opening and early closing arrangement through consideration for the clerks and employees and this being true the institu ton is entitled to praisa I will certainly insttu receive the gratitude of the rattude scores of women and men who have been standing behind counters two or three hours every day moro than thoy will now have to wait THE HEHALD trusts that HCIALD others of our city merchants will follow the praiseworthy example set by the Co op and close their stores at 6 in the evening releasing their tired clerks No patronage will be lost by this early closing and in a few days the public will fall Into the way of shopping at reasonable hours
