| Show oThe President on the Gulf GALVESTON AprillS The President had a royal reception at Galveston this afternoon after-noon and this evening and the people turned out en masse to show their heartfelt heart-felt appreciation of his efforts for the promotion pro-motion and extension of their commercial interests A special coach containing tho Galveston reception committee met the presidential train at Houston On the arrival ar-rival of the train at Galveston a military salute was fired the city bells were rung and all tho steamers and tugs in the harbor har-bor whistled their loudest The city troops and Masonic and civic organizations were present in force and all joined in cheering the distinguished visitor in the most enthusiastic en-thusiastic manner The demonstration was a gratifying ono in every respect The procession was quickly formed and escorted es-corted the President and party from the station to the Mallory steamship on which they made a short trip on the bay for the purpose of inspecting the extensive harbor improvements now progressing Returning from the jetties the party entered en-tered carriages and joined the parade The Grand Army of the Republic posts acted asa as-a committee of escort to the President marching on either side of his carriage bearing floral emblems and union jaciis which when seen on shore indicate the presence of the President A very handsome hand-some floral offering borne by the Grand Army of the Republic post was a large design made to represent the Grand Army of the Republic Later in the evening it was presented to the President Presi-dent by Post Commander Sargent Tho rest of the line was composed ofjthe militia Masonic and other bodies school children and labor organizations The procession passed over a beautifully decorated route one feature of which was an immense floral arch and finally passed in review before be-fore the President The school children threw flowers at his feet as they passed Land stand L-and built a smallsized hill in front of the I After the review the President and party were entertained at supper at the Beach L hotel during which the President was serenaded by the band The partw the 1 went to the balcony where in the presence of an immense throng of people the President i i Presi-dent was formally welcomed to the gulf by General Wane on behalf of the mayor who though present was too ill to speak the President returning thanks in a feeling speech Addresses were made by Governor Gover-nor Hogg and Secretary Rusk A public reception followed and D tine display of fireworks ended the ceremonies |
