| Show Trade in the East Reports from the various centres of trade are about the same as last week but recognize recog-nize temporary slackening even more generally gen-erally while it ia attributed mainly to bad weather and the state of country roads Boston notes less free buying of boots and shoest because stocks on hand are large spring distribution having fallen below expectations ex-pectations Leather is dull and hides easier but lumber more active Philadelphia Philadel-phia reports little call for clothing wool but a fair demand for combing and a good trade in groceries though tea and coffee are quiet Pittsburg reports low prices for iron products but glass sustained with improving im-proving trade At Cleveland general trade is fairly active and lumber especially especi-ally and at Cincinnati machinery is very brisk but other trade only fair At Chicagowheat dressed beef and wool show considerable increase over last year but sales of dry goods fall below those of last year the first adverse report in that trade for many months the clothing and shoe trades still showing gains Business at Detroit is dull at Milwaukee and Kansas City only fair and at St Louis not very strong but at St Paul spring trade has been very satisfactory and at Omaha asd Denver fair At New Orleans trade is quiet at Memphis caution rules but at Savannah the prospect is bright and there IB improvement at Jacksonville Exports are fairly maintained in the aggregate ag-gregate but the movement of wheat flour and corn falls far below last years The returns of foreign trade for March appear to indicate excess of about 57000000 ox ports over imports but the exports cannot be expected to enlarge from this time forward for-ward The money marketin New York is quito undisturbed though at all eastern markets there is more than usual disposition to loan on call rather than on time and at Boston there is considerable stringency Philadelphia Phila-delphia and Pittsburg are easy but at Cleveland there is some presure Cincinnati Cincin-nati is a little close and at Chicago there is I good demand at 6 per cent At other western west-ern points generally the money markets mar-kets are comparatively easy and at the south not materially changed Collections are not as a rule quite satisfactory owing to bad weather and bad country roads But the treasury has again put out about S3DOOOOO in week more than It has taken in and no signs appear ap-pear of heavy gold exports as yet The stock market decidedly improved most of the week with good railroad earnings and the prospect of easy money but has since grown weaker though still averaging about S187 per share higher than a week ago Probably tho fear of important labor troubles has some influence but the state of the great industries is just now altogether alto-gether encouraging The business failures occurring throughout through-out the country during the last seven days as reported to R G Dun Co number for the United States 211 and for Canada 32 or a total of 243 as compared with a total of 243 last week and 256 the week previous to the last For the corresponding correspond-ing week of last year the figures were 209 representing 17G failures in the United States and 33 in the Dominion of Canada |
