Show Sons Of Pioneers Hear Dr. Leonard DR. LEONARD gave credit of Florence Jacobsen for being able to sense real artifacts. He told an interesting story of how she came into possession of a genuine handcart. Did you know that different parts of a handcart were made of different kinds of wood? The spokes w ere made of one kind of wood: the axles were made of another, and the body of the wagon of another. The handcart has been loaned to the Smithsonian Institution where it is on display until the LDS Museum is built. AN INTERESTING note about ab-out the museum is that the articles arti-cles will be rotated. An item you see there on your first visit might not be there when you look for it later. On each visit you could find something new . The group learned that the picture of the Prophet Joseph Smith which was taken from the Bountiful First Ward Tabernacle, has been restored and will have a prominent place in the new museum. The South Davis Chapter Sons of Utah Pioneers monthly month-ly dinner meeting was held Jan. 28 in the banquet room of Servus Drug. Burns Hansen, president, arranged for the informative in-formative program which was enjoyed by 73 members, their partners and guests. REES AND Lois Anderson were recognized because they have been called to serve a mission for the LDS Church to the Oakland Temple Visitor Center. Two past presidents. Harold L. Pope and Gordon B. Pace, were honored by being presented a SUP president's plaque. Dr. Glen Leonard, a professional profes-sional historian and author with the LDS Church's historical histor-ical department, was the fea-- fea-- lured speaker. - - HE TOLD the group that in" .1848 President Brigham i Young said that someday the LDS Church would have one of the finest museums in the world. Dr. Leonard said that Florence Jacobsen has been trying to bring that prophecy to pass for several years. She was named church curator shortly after her release as Young Women's President. Her responsibility was to catalog the church's art collection, collec-tion, artifacts, and museum collection that used to be on Temple Square. Since then these articles have been in storage. Now. they are getting ready to bring these tine art treasures out of storage and arrange them in a new museum that will be built west of Temple Tem-ple Square. Where Hotel Utah Motor Lodge now stands. THE MI'S F.I'M will be an educational institution depicting depict-ing the cultural heritage of all LDS Church members from around the world. The museum will have five galleries galler-ies two art galleries and three of historical significance. Some of the treasures to be displayed are the printing press that the first edition of the Book of Mormon was printed on: first editions of the Book of Morman: first editions edi-tions of the book in every language: lan-guage: stained glass windows and other items from chapels that have been torn down. |
