Show ffafi (tames January, the beginning of the year, makes one think of almanacs. Not many years ago, when the nation was largely rural, the calendar almanac was a big thing in many small towns and communities. com-munities. ON THE wall in barber shops and general stores it hung. It told what the weather would be every day of the year. There were little red and black flags (one of the calendars calen-dars was a promotion of Black Flag, one seems to recall) or other weather symbols in every ev-ery square of a day of the month. SOME PEOPLE took this long-range guessing forecast seriously. Many didn't. But it was at least guessing, and made for conversation and interest. in-terest. And occasionally the fearless fear-less forecaster hit the nail on the head. That tradition is being closely followed by today's to-day's forecasters! |
