Show Look A 2 Beer Licenses CENTERVILLE Officials Offi-cials here are taking a long, hard look at the number of beer licenses being issued to retail establishments within the city. And apparently what a few councilmen see. they don't like. COUNCILMAN Kenneth Holman admitted that he has a personal feeling about beer licenses and if he had his way. "he would like to take back all the licenses the city has given out." Councilman Norman R. Wright says he believes it's time the council sat down and decided how many licenses should be issued for a city the size of Centerville. IT ALL CAME to light at a recent council meeting when Don Mikescll made a request to the council for a beer license for the Maverick Co. which is building gasoline and convenience conveni-ence station at about 100 North Main. Like so many other things, council members expressed concern about the number of licenses "getting out of hand, having loo many establishments establish-ments with beer outlets for a community the size of Centerville." Center-ville." "IT'S NOT THE license at Maverick that I'm concerned about." commented Councilman Council-man Robert Arbuckle. "But about the next stations coming in and asking for the same type of license. If we give to one. we'll have to give to another." Councilman Arbuckle said he was also concerned about troubles that could arise with juveniles and others around establishments selling beer after af-ter 10 p.m. MR. MIKESELL explained that the store would be open from 6 a.m. until 10 or II p.m.. the latter hour only if customer request warranted it. Councilman Dale Ford said that cutting down on the number num-ber of beer licenses would not control or reduce the consumption con-sumption of beer. "WE CAN'T control the amount of beer sold after the license has been approved and we would be showing favoritism favorit-ism for one business over another by refusing a license." he said. Mayor Golden Allen said he would like to postpone action on the license request for six months, but Mr. Mikescll said he would rather have the council coun-cil deny the request than to prolong the decision. HOWEVER, THE council approved a mot ion by Councilman Council-man Arbuckle to table the issue for a month and appoint a committee to study the matter. Councilman Arbuckle and Councilman Holman were named to the study committee. :o.:wv.v.v.w.vav |
