Show Dave Reflects On M.C.A.A. Tournament By DAVE WIGHAM Call it selfish but I honestly don't think that BYU tould be awarded another NCAA tournament like 'ey had last week. FIRST OF all the fans of Utah proved that they 3n't really care to see top caliber basketball when 15,000 fans showed up for the Western finals "etween Georgetown and Oregon State. The only way you're going to see the Marriott enter full is to have the BYU Cougars involved. But :ven then you have to wonder since they weren't "Mere near capacity when theirCougars played Washington in the NIT tournament. SO WHAT happened? The fans of the entire state lf Utah weren't allowed the priviledge of watching basketball games played at BYU last week. And f'ieve me, I went down on Thursday night, it's by Abetter basketball then any of the colleges in these Ms are capable of playing. JW because the BYU place holds 22,000 and it 'asn't a sellout then the rest of us didn't get to see games. And someone please tell me what the 'U people got out of the thing. MOST OF fans at Thursday nights game were iown on the BYU place because of the lack of con-;iniover con-;iniover what the fans wanted. The food ran out and e wasn't a cola to be found anywhere. . Getting back to the two teams involved in the Georgetown, the eventual winners, have ev-I'thing ev-I'thing a great team need. Speed, heighth, quick-' quick-' shooters, rebounders and coaching. Some of , things that the colleges in these parts don't even now exist. HATCHING THE Hoyas play and then watching f colleges in Utah play is like watching the Boston cl'ics play and my church team. talk about the high school players in this state ;aiet me tell you something. Georgetown has four rcsbman on their team that played high school ball season. They are so good now in their rookie .,PJr of college that I just can't imagine how good tywere last year as seniors in the prep scene. WAS in awe of these teams, both ends of the ) 'r- That's right the Georgetown people are just as J J "Passive on defense as they are scoring. You re- p ) k member defense, something seldom taught in this state on any level. High school, college and definitely definite-ly the professional club in these parts could take a lesson on defense from this club. Of all of them I honestly feel the high school coaches make the most effort to play some D. While I'm on the subject of the NCAA tournament last week let me get in a shot to KSL television. Granted on Saturday afternoon they had to black out the Georgetown and Oregon State game due to the 125 mile blackout rule. But why couldn't they have shown us a game from Thursday night? I would just as soon watched the Georgetown and Fresno State game, which they showed at 12:10 a.m., on Friday morning of all times. It would be interesting to see how many people actually stayed up past Hawaii 5-0 to watch that game. WHAT THEY should have done is saved it to show . us on Saturday while the rest of the nation was watching the OSU-Georgetown battle. The people I really feel sorry for though is the fans down south who would have had to drive some five hours to Provo to see the game. They were deprived of seeing the games because of the NCAA rules. BUT THEN again it could have all been resolved had the BYU people not applied for the games. |
