Steve Knighton went the distance on the mound. That set up the battle of the only two unbeaten clubs in the tournament, Viewmont and Brighton. Russ Cannon picked up his second win as he threw a six hitter at the Bengals in going distance and picking up the 5-3 win. Catcher Brian Skidmore had -a great day at the plate getting get-ting a double and a home run, he was aided by another double dou-ble from Grant Hepworth. THEN THE scheduling came into effect and the Vikes were forced to play a double header on Friday following a day off on Thursday, (see related column). In the first game Skyline handed Viewmont its first tournament loss with a 5-2 setback. Bob Moosman went the route for the Vikes and was breezing along until the fifth inning when the roof caved in. With one out and no one aboard and holding a 2-0 margin the Vikes appeared set to win another game. A routine flyball, if there is such a thing as Ken Price at sundown, was lost in the sun and the Eagles went on the score five runs. VIEWMONT bounced back the second game however and downed a good Brighton club, for the second time in the tournament, 2-0 with Frank Putnum going the route on the mound. Paul Sorenson and Putnum were the big guns hitting doubles in the two-run third inning. Then in the final the Skyline crew came untracked and exploded for six runs in the first and cruised to the title. Several Vikes were missing from the game and errors plagued the local team. VIEWMONT HAD a great year in Automotive play with several individuals standing out. |
