Show GARFIELD PLANT IS XOW WORKING WELL A metallurgical expert, who has recently re-cently iuspectcd the Qarn'cld smelter, reports to us that, there is between 35,000 and 100.000 tons of ore piled up there awaiting treatment, lie reports re-ports that tho smel t or, under the management man-agement of Carl Ejlers. who originally constructed it,, is uow making" good, aud" that smelting costs are close to" those of Wnshoo plant, and the savings sav-ings of metals arc excellent, thus disposing of the charge that the Utah Copper concentrates are now making large dust losses. Ho soys that the trouble with the Garfield "smelter was largely due lo the management of Willard Morse und his assistants, who are nil of them blast furnace men. The rcverbcratories did not work well at first, probably because the blast furnace people lacked the ucccssary ability to run them, and at one time the discarding of, the rgver-bcratories rgver-bcratories wa? considered with the idea of briquetting the fine Utah Copper Cop-per concentrates aud running tbcm through the blast furnace. This would havo practically necessitated the rebuilding re-building of tho'plaut. Carl Eilers contended that the re-vorberatorics re-vorberatorics shoulf be given a ch.ancc to work out. and his .-judgment appears to havo been good, for they arc now-working now-working satisfactorily and the Garfield smelter should soou be able to begin to catch up with its "ores, The fact, that Hcinze has secured the old Majestic smelter and will, after January 1, accept ac-cept ores under contract from tbe Silver Sil-ver Kiug Coalition conipany, is a blow to tho Guggenheim iute.rests in Utah. They figured that Hcinze would not be able to' live up to his contract. The loss of these ores will materially afTect tlic, business of the Murray plaut of the American Smelting and Kefiuiug com pany. r , The compauy's smelter at Helena, Mont., is also losing considerable business a3 the Washoe plant is increasing increas-ing its custom ore business, the Washoe ' sampler beug crow'dod with small lots of high-grado outside ores that formerly "wcut to tlm stncltiug trust plant at Ilelcnu.
