Show r x t i . ... . i i f i - " iii' 1 1 Paying for college doesn't have to be a pain in the wallet ' By Anna Rabe sr. business writer The Signpost With rising tuition costs, students may find paying for college difficult. ' "I'm a poor, single college student and they keep raising tuition," said Jessica Dabb, Weber State University health promotion major. Full-time tuition for an instate student is now $2,573, and out-of-state students can expect I to pay $9,008 for the upcoming school year. Student fees amount - to $592 and books can cost $700 . or more per year. Fortunately, WSU provides students with over $6 million in scholarships and $25 million in financial support every year. Sharon Judd, WSU scholarship evaluator, noted the several types of scholarships available. "New freshman have a new application that includes an application for admission and scholarships," Judd said. "These are strictly academic." Sophomore students may reapply for these scholarships. Junior and senior students are awarded scholarships through their departments. Many students also receive scholarships for participating in different programs, such as performing and visual arts, athletic programs and student activities. Other scholarships are available for non-traditional, multi-cultural and international students. Judd recommends that students reapply for scholarships early in spring semester and maintain the GPA and credit hour requirements that are listed in the scholarship contract. "Start thinking'fall semester,'" Judd said. "October is a good time to start the scholarship T 3110 Wall Ave Ogden, UT 84401 Contacts: Jason Christensen & Rick Lovell (801) 392-2847 ake Advantage of our Special Offers for Weber State University Students .- RMR Tickets for stopping in - $200 WSU Bookstore gift cert, with purchase - Enter to win Snowbird Seasons Passes We have a great 1 st time buyers program (including 30 banks to finance) Quick approvals Low rates Trades welcome Most cars under factory warranty Great selection www.aviscarsales.com Pre-Approval Hotline (1-800-209-0907) Services for Students with Disabilities We provide advisement, accomodations, and support services for disabled students attending Weber State University. Another option available to junior and senior students is the training services program sponsored by the Utah Department ofwbrkforCe Services. Karen Doutre, WSU Department of Workforce Services liaison, said the program has existed for many years but students don't take advantage of the program. Students must be juniors or seniors to qualify. "Almost any major qualifies," Doutre said. "You must demonstrate that you can earn a living wage after graduation." This program helps students earn work experience while attending school and can fund two years of school. According to Doutre, there are certain income criteria that must be met, but if a student qualifies for a Pell Grant, they will probably qualify for this program. "Students receive federal training dollars that don't have to be paid back," Doutre said. Financial aid is available for many students at WSU. Students must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The FAFSA form is available at weber.edufinancialaid. Options include federal Pell Grants that do not need to be repaid, as well as Stafford Loans and Perkins Loans, which are repaid to the university after graduation. These options are available to undergraduate students. Some institutional lenders offer rates for students and have ' departments dedicated to educational financing. She added that WSU's Web site has links for other scholarship and financial aid resources. "Come and talk to us. We're glad to help," Judd said. As a recent recipient of a Pell Grant, Dabb is happy she took the time to explore the options available to her. s "I'm very relieved," she said. "It's one less stress on my mind?'
