Bush speaks with the Veterans of Foreign Wars Commander-in-Chief John Furgess after his speech to the VFW national convention in Salt Lake City on Aug. 22. "You can't separate the veterans- from the war," said Dave Wright, a mechanical engineering major who recently returned from serving in the Navy in Iraq. Wright feels the war is justified and that it has helped the Iraqi people. "I spent three months on a ship in the Persian Gulf," Wright said. "All my friends that went ashore, they said, 'You know what, how would you like it if you had a tyrannical leader over you your whole life.' Ousting Saddam Hussein was enough; weapons of mass destruction, protecting America's interests overseas, that's very important." Travis Jones, a WSU criminal justice major who served in the U.S. Army in Iraq, agreed. "Generally, anythingthat's even a remote threat to America, I'm all for taking care of," Jones said. "I've got to believe in my superiors and that's usually enough for soldiers." Jones was sympathetic for those who have lost loved ones, but feels that it is a necessary price to pay. "Nobody wants to go, especially the soldier," Jones said. "But they knew what they were getting into and their loved ones knew what they were getting into." However, not all veterans at WSU agree with Bush's decisions regarding Iraq. "I don't think that the cause that he's saying for people to be over there, I don't think it's a true cause," said Kim Byrarn, a WSU psychology major who served in the U.S. Navy in Iraq. "I mean, too many people are dying already. But I know the people; if they sign up, they sign up on their own free will. They're not forced to do it, and they know that there are consequences. But I just think it needs to end." You can reach reporter Cory Duclos by calling 626-7655.
