Originally, student senators were responsible for sponsoring an "Emphasis Week" during the school year for their constituencies. Now, each day has a new focus that may range from educational to social and even a guest speaker. "The concern raised in the [Aug. 29] meeting was that the senate's primary duty should be legislative," said Christy Butler, WSU internal relations director. "They should concentrate on bettering life on campus, not working on the social aspect." The first proposed bill would eliminate emphasisweek responsibility for student senators and instead give them the option of combining their activities with another group. This leaves students split between activities and the WSUSA ends up competing for support. "I believe that there must be a way to give back to the constituency," Butler said. "The responsibility should not be removed from the senators altogether." The second bill proposed that a recommendation committee should form and decide where student fees are allocated. The purpose of student involvement is to have a representative who will be on the committee and help determine where money is spent. The third constitution bill called for a charter stating the positions and duties of all six vice presidents. After a lengthy debate at the senate meeting, no conclusions were drawn. The bill will be decided by a committee and brought before the senate in two weeks. "The senate is trying to state and dictate to the VPs what they need," Butler said. "The VPs are the executive branch and the senate is the legislative and should not have power over the executive branch."
