WEA, started by students in the Goddard School of Business and Economics, offers opportunities for students to network and gain insights into the pitfalls of starting a business. By Lisa Mann business editor The Signpost When Lewis Gale, the new dean of the Goddard School of Business and Economics, arrived from Louisiana, he knew he had his work cut out for him. Gale would be responsible for maintaining Weber State University's rating in the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International. The AACSB is the body that evaluates the quality of business schools at universities around the world. Fewer than 10 percent achieve accreditation with AACSB. WSU is numbered among those which have achieved that honor. Gale said that the AACSB accreditation process will be one of the focal points of the direction the Goddard School will take over the next year. "Achieving accreditation is paramount to distinguishing Weber State University's business school," Gale said. Accreditation translates to quality and marketability for business students. Gale said that this could mean higher starting salaries for WSU graduates. Over 95 percent of WSU business graduates are either employed or admitted to graduate schools after graduation. Seniors typically score among the top 10 percent on national examinations. Jeffrey Livingston, who served as interim dean until Gale's selection in June, said that Gale has a strong familiarity with the accreditation process. "Familiarity with the process was a major criterion in the search for a permanent dean," Livingston said. Kyle Pettingill, business administration senior, has been enrolled in the Goddard School for three years. "I have absolutely loved that building the teachers are excellent. The overall program is outstanding," Pettingill said. The program at WSU is diverse. Along with business administration, WSUoffers degrees in accounting, management, marketing, information systems and technology, finance, economics, human resource management and logistics and operations management. Gale would like to see the school become more involved in the community. According to Gale, everyone wins with increased community involvement. "Students receive an enormous amount of experience. They establish networks and become part of the community." Gale said. University involvement provides the community with unbiased support and expertise to help with economic development. Gale wants the community to see WSU as an effective resource. Class size is a definite positive facet of the Goddard School. Gale said that small class size is an advantage. Students are able to communicate more readily with the professor on aone-on-one basis. "Students can take courses from full professors who bring years of experience and a wealth of diverse opinions into the classroom," Gale said. Pettingill enjoys the diversity of non-traditional students in the classroom. "I like the different points of view. It adds a different perspective," Pettingill said.
