Close to WSU Session, By Cory Duclos asst. news editor The Signpost Students get many unique experiences as well as the education needed for a marketable degree in the Weber State University College of Arts and Humanities. About 1,300 students at WSU have declared majors in one of the departments within the WSU College of Arts and Humanities. The college consists of five different departments: communication, English and literature and foreign language and literature make up the humanities portion while visual arts and performing arts are the arts segment. June Phillips, WSU College of Arts and Humanities dean, believes the different departments o have been able to combine the 0 liberal arts tradition with real- 33 world career training. 2 "I think one of the good things 2 we've done in these departments 1 at Weber is maintain the liberal arts tradition but also prepare for the world of work in a kind of pre-professional way," Phillips said. The WSU Department of Communication offers students palpable job experiences through such programs as The Signpost and KWCR Radio station. Jason Irvine, KWCR sales and sponsorship director, noted that students can get hands-on Sept. 2 r ti arts, 11 experience not only as radio personalities but also in other areas. 'As a student you get hands-on experience of what real actual working in an actual corporate radio station is like," Irvine said. "It's completely student run. We do have an advisor but everything is taken care of by the students. Personally for me, it's a career move: I'm actually a marketing major, so I'll probably go into radio, television, outdoor media sales. A lot of our on-air personalities are looking to go into becoming radio disc jockeys." He noted that hands-on student involvement was the key factor in the experience. "I'd. say the biggest benefit is that it's completely student run," Irvine said. "Therefore, we're in it for the community and we're also in it for the student body." The English department also offers students several different areas of concentration. "We have four different kinds of emphases: They can do a regular English major, they can do an English teaching major, they can do creative writing emphasis and they can do a technical and professional technical writing emphasis," said Gary Dohrer, English department chair. "They all get them right into the working field." Phillips noted that students in any area of study might complement their degrees and graduate with a Bachelor of Arts by completing the foreign WILL YOU BE AT THE BLOCK PARTY? Students may earn degrees in Spanish, German, French or Japanese. Students wishing to graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree can look to the performing arts and visual arts departments. These departments host several cultural and community events throughout the year. The WSU College of Arts and Humanities offers degrees that can help students get right into the job market or prepare them for further graduate studies. "All these majors have both a liberal arts concentration as well as a kind of pre-professional orientation," Phillips said. "For example, in communication you have public relations and you have journalism and you have all those areas that are more career oriented at the undergraduate level. But you also have the ones that simply prepare people for graduate school in a lot of directions. Many lawyers will have English as an undergraduate major, but you could also major in English in technical writing or creative writing and be ready to go into the world of work to do that." Phillips further noted that the WSU College of Arts and Humanities is an example of the traditional university studies. "The departments in this college are part of the liberal arts tradition in all colleges from the history of time," Phillips said. You can reach reporter Cory Duclos by calling 626-7655. |
