Dumke College ofl IeaJth Professions eases the challenge with its tradition of excellence. The WSU College of Health Professions was named after Dr. Fzekiel R. Dumke, who was born Dec. 15, 1876, in Manitowac, Wis. Dumke attended Denver University on a football scholarship, then eventually graduated from Northwestern School of Medicine in Chicago, 111., in 1 9 1 0. 1 le interned at St. Anthony Hospital in Denver, Colo., and at the LDS 1 lospital in Salt Lake City. Dumke was a surgeon for almost 50 years and one of the founders of the Ogden Surgical Society. He also founded the Dr. Ezekiel R. and Edna Wattis Dumke Foundation and was St. Benedict's Hospital's first chief of staff in 1946. WSU has had a college of health professions since the early 1970s. The college was renamed after Dumke in May, 2001 because of his service and donations to WSU. The Dr. Ezekiel R. Craig Gundy, associate dean of health professions and health sciences professor. "We care about our students," Gundy said. "It is different here than at most universities." More than 2000 students are enrolled in the Dumke College, which has seven departments. By spring 2006, there will be eight. The differentWSU departments are Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Dental Hygiene, Emergency Care and Rescue, Health Administrative Services, Nursing Programs, Radiologic Sciences and Respiratory Therapy. A degree in health sciences will be available by spring 2006. The Dumke College also offers many other degrees. "It is quite complicated," Gundy said. "Students need to get in here early and see what is available and make sure they are on the right track." The health profession field is in high demand and many students are trying to be a part of it hygiene program the first time you apply will be hard," Gundy said. "There is a waiting period here just like at other universities, so you need to make sure you are taking the right classes and are getting As in them." The Dumke college is here to help the students, he said. "I don't want to scare the students away by saying they need to get straignt as, uunuy said. T am just saying the getting As helps with you getting into the rjrogram of your choice sooner." " ' The Dumke collegehasalmost 100 percent job placement after graduation, he said. :- "Most of our students are already working in their field when they graduate," Gundy said. , ' The Dumke college wants each and every student to excel and enjoy his or her education, he said. The college wants to help students in the health field of their choice. "Get in early and talk to the admission department," Gundy said. "Make sure you are doing what needs to be done to " succeed."
