Tomoe Otake, an international student from Japan, said she often uses the library when doing her homework. "I'm taking library science," Otake said. "At first, I didn't know how to use the catalogs and stuff, but now I do so much better research. I find so many information from the reference people." The Stewart Library offers much beyond traditional print and reference resources. In 2004, the staff received praise from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities' accreditation team for its collection of online resources. It includes a range of dictionaries and General and. Organic chemistry tutor oheni lOlO through ehem 2300 including- lielp wil.li your labs. Joan Hubbard, WSU university librarian, said over 200,000 items were circulated during the 2003-2004 school year and the Web site was visited more than 1.6 million times. New this semester will be the opportunity for students to check out audio-visual materials like CDs andVHS tapes. Audio -visual items have long been available for checkout under electronic reserve for an hour or two. Now all items not on reserve will be available: Videos will check out to students for three days and CDs will check out for seven. These, as well as ail print, interlibrary loan and media reserve items will be processed on the first floor just inside the Low rales group rales available. The new entryway is the first part of a campus master plan designed to update the center of campus and make it more of a gathering place for students. Lampros Hall, too, is part of that master plan. 4 i V f Kf$4- lit. "The upper half for staff, the lower half for students." Wireless connectivity is available almost everywhere throughout the building and there are 48 PCs and seven Macintosh computers in the main lab. Also, 16 wireless laptop computers are available for checkout for use in the Internet cafe adjacent to the main student lab. Students can take their laptops into Lampros Hall or call 626-7777 to register for wireless access. Three breakout rooms are available for student use on the first floor. King said the facility was originally designed for24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week use, but that usage hadn't really warranted those hours. Though the lab is often full during peak hours, he said crowds dwindle to almost nothing around midnight. "This lab the faculty lab was designed primarily for scanning equipment and faculty support," King said. "We encourage staff to use all forms of media." New at Lampros Hall this year will be the first of a display showcasing artifacts from the history of computing. David Ferro, WSU computer science professor, has been collecting things like disk storage devices from his technology friends and students for years. Parts of his collection will be on display this fall in the student lab. King hopes that as the collection grows, the display will spread throughout the building. Students, though, are already excited about Lampros Hall. "I study in the rooms and use the Internet computers," said Robert Doxey, WSU clinical laboratory science student "It's easier to study here. The temperature is good, it's clean, it's a good environment." You can reach reporter Becky Palmer by calling 626-7655. rL GET A $ BONUS First Time Donors Present this coupon on your first visit.
