' !--1-"' - : !- Dissecting the College of Science By Chris Ripplinger campus affairs editor The Signpost From astronomy to zoology, the College of Science at Weber State University has it covered. The College is divided into botany, chemistry, geosciences, mathematics, microbiology, physics and zoology. Several majors are offered through each of these disciplines, which have proven to create marketable skills for future careers. "This strong college creates tremendous employment opportunities," said Dale Ostlie, WSU College of Science professor and dean. "We have graduates working for the Forest Service, Thiokol and for the government." The college also offers a summer fellowship to its top students to assist professors in research projects. At the top of his class, senior Michael Marmrose is one example of a student-employee for WSU. Working with Brad Carroll, chairman of the physics department and the Jet Propulsion Lab at v. Freshmen considering the College of Science should be aware of the prerequisites for the classes that they want to take. Completing general education requirements first unve thru Pn at 5:00 am IS t,rvnt is a smart way to get those prerequisite classes. It also gives time for students to create a clear program of study directed toward their major. Incoming students are advised by the department to speak to an advisor or department chair to discuss and explore the opportunities that best suit their interests. With timely progress and an ambitious spirit, students have the opportunity to build a successful portfolio of research with faculty members. Professors of the WSU College of Science write textbooks and travel the world to attend different science-oriented conferences. The American Association of Physics Teachers held its annual national conference 3 Aug. 9-11 at the University of Utah. Many WSU professors attended and presented to other professors and high school teachers. "We have a great student faculty combination," Ostlie said. "Students have the most success after hard work and it's exciting to see them get charged up about something you're excited about. The dedicated faculty and focus on students is what makes Weber State science so fun!" You can leave reporter Chris calling 626-7655. a message Ripplinger for by r-- iDY -r m m |
