Show Pi f V, ()nFnration 20053 : .V-Jk.-. Vets continued from page 40 24 percent are women. The oldest male veteran is 83 years old and is working toward a computer science degree. The oldest female is 65. A little over half of the veteran enrollment is drawing Montgomery GI benefits. Gena Brown, a WSU student and retired army sergeant, goes to the office to certify her enrollment once a month. "I don't take part in many of the other benefits that they offer," Brown said. "I just don't have time." The office workers have served in the military, so it is "veterans helping veterans." Mathew Benson, a WSU student and veteran, is currently in the U.S. Army Reserves. He served four years in the Navy and has worked in the office since January, 2005. "I like working here because I can help veterans find answers to questions that I have also," Benson said. Some soldiers find that when they return from Operation Iraqi Freedom, they have a hard time communicating with civilians. The military jargon doesn't translate well into proper English. Those who find themselves frustrated are welcome to come down to the office, have some coffee and cookies and talk to others who have "been there and done that" The veteran services center has giveaways every month that "7 like working here because I can help veterans find answers to questions that I have also." Mathew Benson, WSU student and veteran include small radios, key chains, pens and pencils. The center will be giving away T-shirts during August that proclaim "WSU VET." The center funds barbeques for ex-military and the veterans have coffee breaks. Visit weber.eduveterans for upcomingeventsandinformation on benefits, call 626-6039 or visit the Miller Administration Building Room 203. There is a free computer lab for veteran students to use. Veterans Upward Bound is located in the same office and has tutoring assistance available. Perkins insists he will do anything he can to help veterans out if they have a legitimate problem. "It's fun," Perkins said about the organization. He wants veterans to know that: "It's all in the family." You can reach reporter Jesica Medellin by calling 626-7624.
