Show TOMATO PRICE IS FIXED AT $15 A TON Should Not Exceed This Figure in Utah, National Food Administrator Admin-istrator Indicates. ' That the national food administration believes that $15 a ton for tomatoes in Utah is a fair price and that the price should not exceed that amount is indicated in-dicated in a telegram received from Washington yesterday by the state food administrator. The telegram iollows: Army and navy have announced today that they were unwarranted in making any awards for canned tomatoes, catsup or other tomato products based on raw material, prices in excess of $15 per ton for stock grown in your state. Please give publicity citing especially army and navy origin. It was explained last night by the representative of one of the biggest canning can-ning corporations in the state that tomatoes to-matoes were purchased by the canneries last season for $12 'a toil, but that the price has been advanced to $15 a ton for the coming season and that sufficient suffi-cient acreage has been signed up at that figure to insure a successful run at all of the canneries. It was added, however, that certain Japanese farmers are holding out for $19 a ton. It is believed that the government knows of this demand and that the telegram tele-gram was sent as a gentle hint that no rate in excess of $15 a ton will be countenanced by the national food administration. |
