Show SSBosT WAGE DIFFERENCES : Agreement With Masters Is Reached and Threatened Strike Averted. The shadow of the threatened painters' pain-ters' strike lifted yesterday afternoon when committees of the master painters' association and local No. 77 niet at the rooms of the association in the Continental Con-tinental block and reached an agreement satisfactory to both parties. In lieu "of the dollar increase tor which the men of the union had held out for the past week or more, substantial sub-stantial and much desired concessions as to working rules and provision ol implements were made by the painting contractors. Work on jobs under way was continued con-tinued vesterdav as usual despite the apparent deadlock, the employees agreeing agree-ing not to interfere unnecessarily .with the progress of contracts while the controversy con-troversy was still unsettled. While the fact that the painters were given an increase of one dollar a dav last vear had something to do with the final decision to abide by the 1917 scale this vear, patriotism had an even greater influence toward bringing the struggle to an end. The representatives nf tl.n piunlovees did not wish, it was said last night, to arouse any industrial indus-trial furore locally that might interfere in any way with the smooth run of business busi-ness and war activities. The painting work of the season will start at onco, with the full force of the city's union men employed. The war has not interfered with the demand de-mand for the services of the trade. Last year was one of the record painting years in Salt Lake and both masters and employees are optimistic that this year will set a new record in business volume. The paperhangers of the city are included in-cluded in the decision reached yesterday. They, too, will begin their season's work at once. The masterpainters last night expressed ex-pressed their gratitude for the eleventh hour stand for patriotism and the prosperity pros-perity of the craft taken by the journeymen. jour-neymen. The womenfolk oi the city, it was stated, can now go ahead with their housecleaning, assured that labor troubles will not interfere with the application ap-plication of a new paint and paper finish. |
