Show SIX RECRUITS ENLIST AFTER GIRL'S APPEAL Miss Marve Spencer, Clad in Jeanne d'Arc Armor, Aids Army by Talks on Street Corner. Responding to the appeal of Miss Marve Spencer six young men yesterday volunteered for army service. Miss Spencer 's appeal was made from a plat-at plat-at Main and Second South streets, a part of a recruiting programme conducted by soldiers of the national a run-. M iss Spencer appeared clad in armor of -the Jeanne d'Arc period, and in stirring Wfci'ases urged enlistment not only for army duty, but for recruits for trades departments. Injecting force into her appeal she pictured the needs of the country in the fight against militarism, illustrating her address with stories of atrocities charged committed by enemies ene-mies o'f the L'nited States and the allies. Music was furnished during the afternoon after-noon by the Twentieth infantry band, in charge of Anton Goetz. S. Shefder of Uts, Russia, a veteran of the Russo-Japanese war, yesterday enlisted en-listed at the local oflice for service with the American forces. Mr. Shepler served in the Russian army as a member mem-ber of the engineering corps. He holds tho distinguished service order, and fhe St. Mary 's cross for valor. Both of these orders were won at Port Arthur. He has two brothers in the Russian army. Shepler speaks five languages fluently. |
