Show MILLIONS WHICH THE GOULDS CAN SQUANDER. The Gould family has SSO.OOO.OOO held in trust from which S31 ,000,000. has been realized In dividends in the last six years. Half of the family has nothing to do but study out plans for spending these millions. In the Gould divorce case now in court In New York, Howard Gould, pre- senting the books of the estate, on Monday testified to the foregoing figures fig-ures and further said that he had built up a private fortune of $10,000,000. Our commercial life is so regulated that some of the most unworthy families fam-ilies obtain wealth beyond the dream of avarice, while countless thousands of other families are filled with dread of want. The Goulds have done nothing to merit their great wealth. The children chil-dren of Jay Gould are ordinary in attainments, at-tainments, with the possible exception of Helen, who is making the best possible pos-sible use of her money. Jay Gould was a product of Wall street gambling. He made great Industrial Institutions his plaj things in the game of gambling gamb-ling and felt no compunction if, in making money, he destroyed Industries, Indus-tries, wrecked railroads and crushed souls. He crippled the Missouri Pacific Pa-cific and the Union Pacific in order to carry through a strategic move in high finance. As a result of his ill-gotten ill-gotten gains, the country is now being be-ing surfeited with recitals of scandals of coarse and vulgar people. When large estates such as Jay Gould's are about to be transferred through the methods provided by law, the people as a whole, who have contributed con-tributed to these swollen fortunes, should have more to say in their distribution. |
