Show Packey McFarland and Johnny Thompson Fight (By Edward W. Smith.) Chicago, June 15. Thero Is going to be a fignt between Packoy McFarland this city and Johnny Thompson, tho Sycamore "cyclone," if the bitter feeling feel-ing that cropped out yesterday and last evening is any indication of what will happen. "Thompson?" remarked Gilmore, Packey's manager, to Larney Llchten-6tein, Llchten-6tein, Thompson's guide. "Thompson going to fight Nelson, eh? Tell me where does Thompson come in, any-wav." any-wav." "He comes In to this extent," was the quick retort from the Thompson camp, "that if he ever meets your star in a long fight he'll knock his head off. Yes, and for a side bet, too." This rapid-fire conversation took-place took-place In the Chicago American office, where the two managers chanced to meet, 'both looking for some news from San Francisco regarding a fight there July 5 or September 9 with Battling Nelson. Gilmore had been expecting word for several days that Promoter Coffroth had succeeded In getting Nel eon to sign up, and Llchtensteln was looking for tho news that Nelson had sidetracked Packey and would take on the cyclone instead. Of course, neither knew what tho other was After of course not but the feeling was a trifle strained and the opening conversation a bit labored. labor-ed. "It's surprising how all these light-! light-! weights bar Thompson in the challenges challen-ges they issue," mused Llchtensteln. I "It seems that ever since he trimmed up Mickey Gannon clown east and put him out of business completely that nobody will haro anything to do with Johnny. Welsh was offered a meeting In New York, but suggested that somebody some-body elso beat Thompson first. Wc offered of-fered to stop Tommy Murphy or Leach Cross, but tiey were as deaf as posts." "Well, I have good ears, and if I heard a noise like a good purse you , would find me right on the job," Gilmore Gil-more remarked. "It wouldn't matter much whether it was Thompson or Nelson or anybody else, as long as we were assured of a nice bit for winning. Thompson, eh? Tell me, where docs ho come In?" That started fireworks a plenty, and tho men were in a sharp wrangle when the offer of the bet was made. The managers were split out when on. the verge of personalities and said that they would seize the very first opportunity oppor-tunity to clinch up a match between their fighters. There seems to he little doubt that this would result In one of the best lightweight encounters we 'have had In many a long day, and if it were decided de-cided within a reasonable distance of Chicago the local fans would fairly swarm to see the meeting. With both of tho men hot on the trail of Battling Nelson for a fight for the title, first one and then the other seeming to have the better of tae chase, there is little wonder that feeling feel-ing has developed between the men and that it should crop out in this first meeting of the managers. Packey Is tied up with Phil Knight !at Kansas City at the present time, j but there Is no chance of that match , standing in the way of a meeting with j Thompson If a purse Is offered somewhere. some-where. The old argument over weighing-in time still stands in the way of a Pack- ey-Nelson match, i |
