Show BRILLIANT RACE MEET AT ASCOT, ENGLAND Ascot. June 15. The Royal Ascot, tne race meeting of society and the event that brings the London season to a close, opened today with a promise prom-ise of clear skies and an attendance never beforo equaled in either brilliance bril-liance or number. For Americans the meeting holds a greater Interest than ever, for. In addition to the social as pects of the gathering, a number of American horses have been entered lor the most importaut races of the week. The opening today was unique also, In that for the first time an American woman, the Countess of Granard. who was Miss Beatrice Mills of New York, had a place in the royal procession, which made its way from Windsor Castle to the royal enclosure facing the Ascot course. The Coventry stakes of ten sovereigns sover-eigns each, with 1.000 sovereigns added, add-ed, for 2-year-olds, distance five furlongs, fur-longs, was won by the chestnut colt by Gallinute-Admlration. Yellow Slave was second and Nell Gow third. August Belmont's Merry Tas and H. P Whitney's Artless were among the thirty starters. The Ascot stakes, a handicap, with 2,000 sovereigns added, distance two miles, was won by Rushcutter; Laughing Laugh-ing Miss, second, and W'edding Ring third. |
