Show price of admission to tho racea haw been kept at ? for the purpose of keeping out the office boy and others who cannot afford to patronize tho "sport of kings." The gambling features, fea-tures, however, seem to be the point of attack on the part of the citizens at large and In view of tho hold gambling gamb-ling has taken on the public, President Presi-dent McDonald holds that Salt Lake is better without the betting features and all that comes In their train. President McDonald said: "I do not- proposo to be a part or party to a deal that tho general public pub-lic frowns down. We have had horse races at the fair grounds prior to thl.s year, but there never has been a tlmo when public sentiment was so strong against them as now. "There seems to be a moral wave sweeping the entire country, and I would much" prefer to lend "my support sup-port to such a movement than to do anything to prevent the same. "We all realize that horse racing rac-ing means gambling, but I have this to say of the parties who are conducting conduct-ing the races at the fair grounds this year that they have done all In their power to keep them as clean as races can be kept. They have had on the grounds constantly several Plnk-erton Plnk-erton detectives, as well as local officers, offi-cers, who have at all time's put forth their best efforts to prevent touting, minors from playing the game, and refusing re-fusing absolutely to allow any woman wo-man downstairs where the betting Is done. "The admission at the gate was placed at $1 for tho purpose of keeping keep-ing those who could not afford to play Ihc races out of the grounds; but notwithstanding not-withstanding all these facts, the sentiment sen-timent generally Is against racing. I therefore think it best that the races be discontinued." RACES TO BE CALLED OFF AT SALT LAKE CITY Salt Lake, June 14.
