Show Athlete of the week Southern Utah State's baseball team had many heroes last week as they claimed five big wins over defending NAIA champion Grand Canyon College and Big Sky toughie Northern Arizona. Two players that had as much to do with the outstanding week as anybody were pitcher Scott Bergerhouse and designatec1 hitter Gary (Tex) Cowart. For their feats, the two are receiving Athlete of the Week honors from the Record. Going into last week, Coach Don Conrad was extremely concerned about pitching. The'Birds had several hurlers out of commission and others questionable. Eight games in a row had the potential to sink the T-Birds T-Birds ship. Nothing of the sort occurred, thanks in part to an outstanding effort by Scott Bergerhouse. The SU chucker threw two complete games and notched wins in both, with only one days rest bet ween efforts. Bergerhouse picked up a win against the antelopes an-telopes of Grand Canyon Thursday and hung on for a 2-1 win over Northern Arizona Saturday. In chalking-up 14 in-nings in-nings pitched, Bergerhouse allowed only 12 hits, gave up a mere three runs and recorded 7 strikeouts. That gives him a 1.93 ERA for the week. Not too shabby. Gary Cowart provided several big blows during the eight game home stand, including three home runs and two doubles. One of Cowarts blows was a last-inning, game winning shot against Grand Canyon. In 21 at bats he collected nine hits and drove in 10 T-Bird runs. His weekly batting average was .429. For the year, Cowart is hitting .418 with four doubles, six homeruns and eight walks. For their efforts, both men will receive certificates cer-tificates from the Iron County Record. : 4J). JL- I ' ' ' ' r ' ' I' ' ' ' -' ' n J I 1 t-4 ttw jf. i V l "--a.
