Show Boys Staters named The Cedar City American Legion Post 74 has selected nine young men from the junior class at Cedar City High School to represent this area at Boys State in Logan. The young men chosen are Emron Tripp, Michael Anderson, John Cannon, Darin Averett, David Leavitt, Curtis Hunt, Barry Hansen, Leoman Church and Kendall Bryant. They will attend Boys State during the week of June 7-13. They are sponsored by the following businesses: State Bank of Southern Utah, First Security E. Bank, Zions First National Bank, Walker Bank, Coleman Company and Security Enterprises. Cedar City Lions Club, Rotary Club and B.P.O.E, 1556 are the civic clubs that have sponsored these boys. According to Dee Cowan, Boys State chairman, the applicants were all interviewed by a panel of judges who looked for such things as leadership, patriotism, church activities, civic activity and grade point average of current year. The Boys State program originated in Illinois in 1934 and has now been adopted by the National Organization of the American Legion. The program is in all 50 states. The week spent at Boys State will provide the young men with practical applications of the principles of democratic government. The Boys State citizens will organize their own city, county and state governments. They will choose their own of-, of-, ficials in . accordance with regular election procedures. They will learn the duties of the various city, county and state offices and will introduce and argue their own bills in a legislature. And justice will be administered by their own law enforcement en-forcement agencies and courts. |
